This career-seasonal position is located in Shenandoah National Park, in the Facilities Management Division, Water/Wastewater Branch.
The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the lead operator for the Mathews Arm Wastewater Treatment Plant (located near Skyline Drive mile-marker 22) performing water and wastewater treatment duties.
Duties
This permanent, career-seasonal (Subject-to-Furlough) position is located in Shenandoah National Park assigned to the Division of Facilities Management, Water/Wastewater Branch. Duty station for this position is at Park Headquarters near Luray, VA; duties may be performed throughout Shenandoah National Park.
The primary function of this position is to perform the responsibilities of the Lead Operator of the Class 4 Mathews Arm Wastewater Treatment Plant, a Lead Operator of a Vehicle Wash Bay, and a Class 6 Water Treatment Operator of various potable water systems.
Ensure regulatory compliance of the systems to the standards set forth by Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, U.S. Public Health, Virginia Department of Health and EPA.
You must possess and maintain a current Virginia Water Works Class 6 License or higher. You must include a copy of your license as part of your application package.
You must possess and maintain a current Virginia Wastewater Class 4 License or higher. You must include a copy of your license as part of your application package.
Collects samples to determine degree of treatment required/achieved. Makes adjustments and repairs to valves, controls, pumps, blowers, etc.
Records water chlorine readings, monitors turbidity, etc.
Operate and maintain vehicle wash bay; record all testing/results.
Install/modify/repair supply and demand side water lines, water closets, disinfection pump units, relays, etc.
Operates backhoes, forklift, mowers, weed whackers, etc. to maintain grounds, etc.
Position is essential/emergency and may be required to report for duty during emergency operations.
CAREER-SEASONAL: This is a Career-Seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectee is guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment. The typical season for this position is March through mid-November but can be variable during these months due to project requirements or weather conditions.
PARK LOCATION: Shenandoah National Park preserves and protects more than 300 square miles of nationally significant natural and cultural resources, scenic beauty, and congressionally designated wilderness within Virginia's northern Blue Ridge Mountains; and provides a broad range of opportunities for public enjoyment, recreation, inspiration, and stewardship. Within just 90 miles of Washington D.C. the Park provides visitors the ability to explore mountain peaks, hidden hollows, cascading streams, accessible wilderness, and stunning natural beauty. Approximately 40% of the Park is designated wilderness with over 500 miles of hiking trails and the iconic Skyline Drive, SHEN was established as an eastern Park that provided a "western Park experience". Due to the Park's easy accessibility to D.C and other highly populated areas along the east coast, visitation exceeds 1.4 million visitors annually which results in significant resource protection and visitor management issues and incidents.
Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc.
Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment
