As a Utility Systems Operator-Repairer, you will operate and maintain potable water systems and wastewater treatment plants located throughout Shenandoah National Park. This key position ensures regulatory compliance of the systems to the standards set forth by Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, U.S. Public Health, Virginia Department of Health and Environmental Protection Agency. As such, it requires the applicant to possess and maintain a Virginia Class 6 Waterworks License.
Duties
Perform daily wastewater testing in a certified laboratory in compliance with policies and regulations
Make adjustments to achieve maximum efficiency of water treatment within established guidelines and vary the treatment process in accordance with test
Maintain well head protection plans, sampling plans, quality assurance plans, microbiological analysis, and general records/data
Obtain samples, test water, and interpret results in order to determine the need for the addition of chemicals and agents into potable water and wastewater systems
Requirements
- You must be a U.S. citizen or national.
- Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
- May be subject to a one-year probationary period.
- All requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
- You will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
- A Virginia Class 4 (or higher) Wastewater License is required for this position within 1 year after employment. A back-flow device testing certification is required within 2 years after employment.
- This position is designated emergency/essential. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
- You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
- A valid state driver's license is required.
- You must be able to obtain and maintain a Virginia Class 6 Waterworks License.
Qualifications
In order to be qualified for this position, you must possess the ability to do the work of a Utility Systems Repairer-Operator with only occasional supervision of your work in progress. Your experience must include: repairing a wide variety of equipment used in the water/wastewater treatment process, such as chlorinators, masticators, pumps, injection systems, or aeration equipment; performing standard laboratory tests to determine the characteristics of potable or waste water, such as pH or turbidity, and recording the results for official reporting; based on the laboratory test results, following standard operating procedures regarding the addition of chemicals/compounds to water to achieve a desired result; and monitoring gauges, pumps, and water levels to ensure a water system is operating in alignment with facility guidelines. Your resume must document fully how you meet this requirement.
You must also possess by time of appointment and be able to maintain a Virginia Class 6 (or higher) Waterworks License.
