The purpose of this position is to provide quality food service to patients, employees, and guests through food preparation, service, sanitation. This position is located at the Navajo Area Indian Health Service, Chinle Service Unit, Chinle, Arizona.

Duties

Prepares food for complex diets per menus. Plans, coordinates, schedules and times work assignments to assure that food items are prepared per schedule and at the proper temperature. Adjusts amounts and proportion of ingredients in recipes. Serves hot and cold food for patients and employees. Using established policies and procedures, maintains a sanitary, safe working environment for employees and food production by using proper personal hygiene. Answers phone calls and documents data for patient diet orders. Appropriately documents all substitutions made on the menus. Assist with nutrition education to individual clients or groups.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: WAGE GRADE STATEMENT: Candidates for this position will be evaluated under the Federal Wage System (FWS) Job Grading Standards. Applicants will be rated in the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position. Physical Effort: Cooks at this grade level perform work requiring continual standing and walking, and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing and pulling, and bending. They frequently lift or move objects weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds) unassisted, and occasionally lift or move objects weighing over 18 kilograms (40 pounds) with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers. Working Conditions: The work is performed in kitchen areas which are well lighted but are often hot and noisy. The cooks are exposed to steam, fumes, and odors from cooking and to extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration or freezing units. There is danger of slipping on wet floors that have been recently mopped or where food has been spilled. They are subject to possible cuts from knives and burns from steam, hot foods, stoves, and hot grease and water. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
