Duties

As a Microbiologist, you will: Provide expert scientific advice, consultation and leadership in designing, coordinating and maintaining scientific project goals, objectives and priorities within the organization and in the general public health community. Develop strategies to meet short and long-range goals and assure that strategies reflect promising directions in research, preventive, and clinical approaches. Identify and analyze scientific issues and their impact on operations that are critical to the public health community at large. Analyze epidemiologic investigation data utilizing new methodologies or existing techniques that have been revised. Collaborate with scientists and program consultants in various aspects of the study or survey design process, and other study support duties including analyzing and reporting of data and data dissemination to audiences. Analyze study or project implementation procedures for improvement. Prepare and provide timely status reports. Collaborate and provide expert scientific advice to all organizational levels within the agency, as well as with various state health agencies, and partner organizations, both nationally and internationally, to synthesize, and implement policies and directions for future development.

Qualifications

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Basic Qualifications: A. Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent. OR B. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Minimum Qualifications: To qualify at the GS-13 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level, which must include the following experience: designing, overseeing, implementing, and conducting microbiological scientific surveys/studies or projects to identify and solve problems. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
