Duties

As a Supervisory Research Microbiologist, you will: Plan, prioritize and advise on the scientific and programmatic aspects of laboratory work on diagnostics, strain characterization, bioinformatics, surveillance and research. Serve as the Division's resource for critical problems and issues regarding this particular program or area. Participate in formulating and defining overall mission and program objectives. Determine requirements for mapping future program direction and long-range planning. Lead and ensure adherence to laboratory quality and safety standards. Explore and assess the impact of state-of-the-art technology on programs and activities. As a recognized expert, organize, lead, and actively participate in technical and professional activities in partnership with national and international organizations. Plan work to be accomplished by subordinates and assign work based on priorities.

Qualifications

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Basic Qualifications: A. Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent. OR B. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Minimum Qualifications: To qualify at the GS-15 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-14 grade level, which must include the following experience: providing leadership and guidance to scientists that conduct research, surveillance, and technical support activities; and maintaining laboratory quality and safety standards. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

A copy of your transcripts or equivalent documentation is required for positions with an education requirement, or if you are qualifying based on education or a combination of education and experience. An official transcript will be required if you are selected.

A college or university degree generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For a list of schools which meet these criteria, please refer to Department of Education Accreditation page.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program.
