Duties

As a Supervisory Research Microbiologist, you will: Design, plan, prioritize, and coordinate the scientific and programmatic aspects of the branch's laboratory work on diagnostics, strain characterization, bioinformatics, surveillance, research and development, and outbreak investigation. Serve as supervisor responsible for the planning, development, and technical direction for a broad set of research and technical activities, guiding groups of professional scientists for complex work assignments. Participate in formulating and defining overall mission and program objectives, and in determining requirements for future program direction and long-range planning for the branch. Conduct research on methods of molecular subtyping, strain virulence and prevalence of the etiologic agents of bacterial respiratory diseases and develop molecular diagnostic methods for detection in clinical materials. Determine additional areas of research that must be explored to address critical national and priority organizational unit objectives. Lead and ensure adherence to laboratory quality and safety standards. As a recognized expert, organize, lead and actively participate in technical and professional activities of national and international organizations through workshops, scientific meetings and symposia. Plan work to be accomplished by teams and assign work based on priorities.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications: Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent. OR Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Minimum Qualifications: To qualify at the GS-15 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-14 grade level, which must include the following experience: providing supervision and guidance to multidisciplinary teams (i.e., biologists, microbiologists, bioinformaticians, laboratory quality specialists, etc.) that conduct research, surveillance, and technical support activities for a range of bacterial diseases. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
