This position is located at a Salisbury VA Medical Center. Position is organizationally aligned under the Facilities Management Service. The primary purpose of the position is to apply a variety of coating materials to multiple surfaces such as wood, metal, concrete, etc.
Duties
Major duties include, but are not limited to:
Plans and lays out the work plan for repair works with cracks in masonry, deteriorated caulking compounds and other materials to assure surfaces are prepared to receive paint or wall covering so no marks or rough areas are visible when paint or wall covering is in place.
Repair cracks in masonry, deteriorated caulking compounds and other materials to assure surfaces are prepared to receive paint or wall covering.
Selects and uses the proper equipment and tools such as brushes, rollers, spray guns, compressors, scraper, straight edges, scaffold, and ladders.
Determines the methods, techniques, devices, and materials that are best suited to the surface finish required to ensure surfaces have a smooth texture and appearance.
Prepares surfaces by hand and power sanding, sand blasting, wire brushing, filling, shaping, and leveling with metal and synthetic resins.
Applies coating materials including paint, varnishes, shellacs, and special painting materials with any of the accepted trade devices including brushes, rollers, rollers with extension handles, airless spray guns including pole guns and graining devices designed to give special effects.
Interprets written material, including technical materials, rules, regulations, instructions, reports, charts, graphs, or tables; applies what is learned from written material to specific situations.
Works from building plans and sketches to plan and lay out the routing painting activities.
Knowledge in mixing and applying adhesives by methods and means strictly in accordance with manufacturer's directions.
Select and uses the proper equipment and tools to apply paint and other protective coating materials.
Apply knowledge of spray compressors, nozzles, and all related spraying equipment.
Uses machines, tools, or equipment effectively to complete the job.
Knowledge of techniques, devices, and materials to get a variety of finishes on all kinds of surfaces.
Mixes all painting materials to ensure uniformity of color, complete dispersion of pigment and uniform composition.
Knowledge of hazardous materials and waste and their uses.
Stands, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
Handle, lift, carry, and set up parts and equipment that weigh up 50 pounds.
Work while wearing a respirator or other breathing apparatus.

Physical Requirements: Work is performed from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms and in cramped and hard-to-reach places. The incumbent is required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Incumbent frequently lifts, carries, and sets up materials and equipment that weigh 25 pounds, and occasionally handles materials and equipment that weigh 50 pounds and over.
Working Conditions: Work is accomplished inside and outside and dirt, spray, and fumes are usually present. Incumbent is occasionally required to wear protective equipment that is uncomfortable. Incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises.
