This position is located at a VA Medical Center within the Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (Vison 6). The position is organizationally aligned under the Facilities Management Service. The primary purpose of this position is to apply a variety of coating materials to multiple surfaces such as wood, metal, and concrete.
Duties
Duties include but are not limited to:
Paints surfaces by patching, sanding, dusting, and applying paint by brush, spray, or roller to interior or exterior surfaces
Determines the methods, techniques, devices, and materials that are best suited to the surface finish required to insure surfaces have a smooth textured and decorative appearance, for example glossy finish, flat finish, grained effect, or a finish that must meet specified thickness
Prepares surfaces by hand and power sanding, sand blasting, wire brushing, filling, shaping, and leveling with metal and synthetic resins
Mixes and applies pre-coating agents such as pickling and alkali compounds to remove scale, rust, dirt and old paint from surfaces so that coating materials will adhere properly leveling dents and scars
Applies coating materials including paint, varnishes, shellacs, and special painting materials with any of the accepted trade devices including brushes, rollers, rollers with extension handles, airless spray guns including pole guns and graining devices designed to give special effects
Uses coating techniques that insure surfaces are fully coated, protected and free from drips and runs
Paints machinery and equipment, strips and refinish doors, and waterproofs walls; Cuts, installs, and glazes glass as necessary in windows, doors and partitions; Removes existing wallpaper, properly prepares the surface and installs new wallpaper

Physical Requirements: Work is performed from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms and in cramped and hard-to- reach places. The incumbent is required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Incumbent frequently lifts, carries, and sets up materials and equipment that weigh 25 pounds, and occasionally handles materials and equipment that weigh 50 pounds and over.
