About the Position: This is a Health Technician Position located at Fort Drum, New York.
This is a Direct Hire Solicitation.
Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service.
Duties
Prepare appropriate specimens for testing.
Compile lab results each area of specialization.
Perform calibration on all instruments to ensure samples meet quality standards.
Assist in the training of new technicians.
Gather data for certain administrative reports.
Prepare specimens for shipment to other installations and laboratories in accordance with instructions concerning prevention of breakage, leakage and thawing of frozen specimens.
Consult with physicians regarding test findings or on additional tests.
Requirements
- This is a Line of Sight (LOSS) position which requires the incumbent to complete a Childcare Background Security Investigation.
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position may require use of protective clothing and/or uniform.
- A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing.
- Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization and annual seasonal influenza immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact.
- This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
- Incumbent may be required to work shift work, nights, weekends and holidays.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required.
- A laboratory technology is required from an accredited institution and be certified by the ASCP, AMY or other board

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes collecting specimens, performing complex medical laboratory tests and examinations, checking results for accuracy and validity, and preparing final results reports.
OR
Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, or Microbiology.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
AND
Certificate: This position has a selective placement factor which must be met prior to employment and for continued employment: This position requires a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Certification. Certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologist (AMT) or other board or registry deemed comparable by Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD(HA)) or their designee as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) is required.
Education
FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
