About the Position: This position is a Developmental GS-05, GS-06, to a GS-07 position at Guthrie Army Health Clinic, Fort Drum, New York. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation

Duties

Prepare appropriate specimens for testing. Compile lab results each area of specialization. Perform calibration on all instruments to ensure samples meet quality standards. Assist in the training of new technicians. Gather data for certain administrative reports. Prepare specimens for shipment to other installations and laboratories in accordance with instructions concerning prevention of breakage, leakage and thawing of frozen specimens. Consult with physicians regarding test findings or on additional tests.

Requirements

• Tier 1: Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
• This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing.
• Hepatitis B Immunization and annual seasonal influenza vaccine are mandatory.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
• This is a Line of Sight (LOSS) position which requires the incumbent to complete a Childcare Background Security Investigation.
• This position requires screening for required immunizations and for evidence of Tuberculosis.
• The work involves regular and recurring risks or discomforts associated with working in a clinical laboratory (e.g. working with infectious substances, and irritant reagents.)
• This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
• Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) is required for the GS-07 position.

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. For GS-5 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes collecting specimens, assisting with preparing samples for testing, and/or review results for validity. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). OR Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position, such as, Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, or Microbiology. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. For GS-6 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes collecting specimens, preparing specimens for testing using manuals and written instructions, and/or preparing results reports. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). OR Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, or Microbiology. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages. For GS-7 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes collecting specimens, performing complex medical laboratory tests and examinations, checking results for accuracy and validity, and preparing final results reports. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). AND Certification: Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) is required for the GS-07 position. Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For the GS-7, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
