About the Position: This is developmental Medical Technician position located at Fort Drum, New York.
This is a Direct Hire Solicitation.
Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service.
Duties
Collect appropriate specimens and prepare them for testing.
Read, compile and report results in each area of specialization.
Calibrate various analyzers as required and run quality control samples on all instruments.
Assist in the training of new technicians.
Gather and record data for certain administrative reports.
Prepare specimens for shipment to other installations and laboratories in accordance with instructions concerning prevention of breakage, leakage and thawing of frozen specimens.
Consult with physicians regarding test findings or on additional tests.
Requirements
- Tier 1: Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal
employment.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing.
- This positions requires a preplacement AND annual medical examination.
- Immunization screening is required for proof of Hepatitis B immunization and for evidence of tuberculosis.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is, therefore, subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
- This is a Line of Sight (LOSS) position which requires the incumbent to complete a Childcare Background Security Investigation.
- Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) is required for the GS-07 position.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience and/or education requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. GS-5:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes collecting specimens, assisting with preparing samples for testing, and/or review results for validity. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).
OR
Education: Four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position, such as, Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, or Microbiology. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
For GS-6
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes collecting specimens, preparing specimens for testing using manuals and written instructions, and/or preparing results reports. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
OR
Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, or Microbiology. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
For GS-7
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes collecting specimens, performing complex medical laboratory tests and examinations, checking results for accuracy and validity, and preparing final results reports. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
OR
Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, or Microbiology. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
AND
Certification: Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) is required for the GS-07 position. (Note: You must attach a copy of your certification.)
This position can be filled at any level (GS-5; GS-6; or GS-7) with noncompetitive promotion to the next grade levels are authorized until you reach the full performance level of GS-7; pending time in grade requirements and demonstrated ability to perform the next higher/target level grade duties.
Education
FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
