This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: Desk Sergeant and Police Officer duties performing law enforcement duties in an area of exclusive federal jurisdiction.

Duties

Provide structured one-on-one training and mentoring for newly assigned employees. Use the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and other local networks to provide information to police officers and to coordinate law enforcement efforts and information with other civilian and military agencies throughout the United States. Coordinate emergency responses between law enforcement, security, fire, and other emergency units, and receives and acts on calls concerning reports of violations or complaints. Establish response procedures, securing the area(s)/facilities, and making telephonic notifications to responsible activity/facility personnel, in the event of alarm activation. Issue and inventory keys, weapons, ammunition, and other equipment at beginning and end of shift. Handle difficult or confrontational individuals to maintain control of the situation. Maintain communications with mobile patrol units, access control points, passes directions and information to Police Officers. Prepare accurate and concise police reports ensuring the reports contain all pertinent information.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Requires the incumbent to carry firearms or other weapons authorized for their jurisdictions and required to re-familiarize themselves with authorized weapons periodically and demonstrate skill/proficiency in their use.
  • Requires the incumbent to possess, or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License.
  • Call back and emergency overtime are regular requirements of this position.
  • Requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • Work requires the employee to obtain and maintain a secret clearance.
  • Incumbent must undergo and successfully pass an initial and annual physical examination and continue to be physically fit to perform the duties of a Desk Sergeant.
  • Duties require the incumbent to wear a prescribed uniform while on duty.
  • Employee must successfully complete the emergency 911 operators course, qualified breathalyzer and VCIN/NCIC terminal operator within 12 months of employment.
  • This position meets the criteria for compliance with Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. This position is subject to a pre-employment screening and random testing thereafter.
  • This position is subject to the Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968.
  • Requires the incumbent to successfully complete the U.S. Army Military Police School (USAMPS) Civilian Police Academy program instruction within one year if it has not already been completed.
  • May expose the incumbent to inclement weather while working both inside and outside.
  • Requires the incumbent to undergo and successfully pass initial and annual re-certification of standard Army physical agility test.
  • Requires the incumbent to be certified in the use of radar detection equipment and alcohol detection equipment.
  • Work may involve lifting and carrying heavy objects of up to 50 pounds.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Evaluate situations to determine degree or severity of the incident to dispatch appropriate emergency response team. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
