Duties
As a/an Lead Research Microbiologist you will:
Serve as a senior scientist and nationally recognized technical authority in viral diagnostics.
Plan, prioritize, initiate, design, conduct, coordinate, direct and lead basic and applied research studies, particularly as related to development of novel diagnostics for virus families that cause diseases of humans.
Provide consultation and advice to the agency in areas of personal research expertise.
Serve as a Team Leader.

Basic Qualifications:
Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.
OR
Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify at the GS-14 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 grade level, which must include the following experience: overseeing technical and scientific planning and implementation of serologic and molecular testing and laboratory-based research studies; and providing technical surveillance support for vaccine preventable diseases to jurisdictions in the United States and international partners.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
