This position is located in Arlington, VA This position participates in studies, writes policies & procedures for the laboratory system programs.

Duties

As a your typical work assignments may include: Provides consultation and expert formal testimony in courts of law on cases ranging from the simplest to the most difficult or complex. Coordinates program initiatives with managers, staff, and other forensic science/law enforcement agencies on matters relating to the chemical analyses and evidence handling programs. Identifies and analyzes present technical capabilities, evaluates existing information; develops and performs or directs the sampling and analysis of evidence. Evaluates existing program documentation for consistency with established DEA and laboratory system goals and objectives.

If you are qualifying based on education or if there are mandatory education requirements listed below, you MUST submit a copy of your college transcripts with your application. Basic Qualification Requirements: Applicants must meet ONE of the following qualification requirements: (A). Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR (B). Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Applicants applying for the GS-14 must meet one of the following requirements: Have at least one full year of specialized experience that is at least equivalent to work performed at the GS-13 grade level. Specialized experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Qualifying experience must demonstrate the following: developing methods for and conducting analysis of difficult samples to detect the presence of controlled substances and related materials; or serving as a consultant on forensic, chemical and technical matters in the field of controlled substance analysis; or advising state, local and industrial officials on matters pertaining to controlled substance analysis; or advising and assisting in the performance of certain enforcement activities such as clandestine laboratory seizures; or participating in studies to improve laboratory system programs and procedures. ??? Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants must meet time-in-grade and time after competitive appointment requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
