Duties

-Inventory Control: Ensures that adequate quantities of general supplies are available to meet workload demands through a systemized process of ordering, receipt and inventory control. Assures that general procedure rooms are stocked with necessary supplies at all times with special attention to emergent equipment and supplies. Coordinates new product evaluation. Recommends methods and products to reduce costs and/or increase quality. -Technologist Staff Scheduling: Determines staffing requirements based on past, present, and future workload patterns and develops the weekly/monthly schedules. Organizes staff work assignments, including lunch and break rotations. Reports absences and tardiness to Supervisor. Recommends the reassignment of techs if necessary because of call-ins or increased/decreased workload. Coordinates leave requests i.e. vacation schedules, to maintain optimal staffing levels. - Staff Training: Trains new technologists in Digital Radiography, CR system, myelograms, and other special procedures. Recommends, coordinates and evaluates new or modified procedures/protocols. Instruct other technologists on specialized tasks and new/modified procedures and policies. Participates in the education of technologists through departmental in-services. Participates in the evaluation of new employees. - Equipment Maintenance/Repair: Coordinates the repair orders and repair of radiographic equipment. Serves as the liaison between radiology and Biomedical Engineering and repair contractors. Monitors work performance by contractors and in-house services assuring satisfactory completeness. Recommends equipment improvements, repairs, upgrades, etc. -Confers with radiologists to determine requirement of nonstandard exams. - Performs all radiologic procedures including but not limited to diagnostic radiology, fluoroscopic procedures, surgical radiography including the use of portable radiography and portable fluoroscopy when required. -Performs minor special exams utilizing surgical sterile techniques. This requires preparation of surgical trays, preparation of contrast, supplying of catheters, sterile assurance of the patient and equipment that may come in contact with the sterile field with the purpose of assuring that all preventive measures have been taken to prevent contamination of the patient. This is done to minimize hazards associated with the procedure and involves the use of sterile packs, gloves, syringes, catheters, clean-up trays, etc., after exam is completed. Adheres to hospital infection control and safety policies/techniques with emphasis on sterile technique; the storage of sterile supplies; the disposal of body fluids and 'sharps'; proper attire; hand washing practices; and continuing education. -Prepares contrast materials. These contrast materials are used in the exams performed in the minor special procedure area and the technologist must know the effects and reactions to the contrast. Improper use or administration of the contrast materials run the risk of patient mortality and, therefore, it is essential that a thorough understanding of the contrast material use is possessed by those who prepare it. In addition, must be continuously alert to the patient's condition and other disorders. Reactions on the part of the patient require immediate attention so that harm does not come to the patient or equipment. - Practices radiation safety in order to reduce exposure to patients, staff and self. This is achieved by the use of lead aprons, lead gloves, lead shields, lead lined walls and collimation. Film badges are worn by the technicians in compliance with radiation regulations. The incumbent must be aware of and practice the safety policies/procedures of the Medical Center, and participate in quality assurance activities as directed. - Maintains records and files of exams performed on patients. This includes the maintenance of registration and editing of patient exams in the computerized information system, copying of images (to CD), logging patients on the HIS-RIS work list. -Responsible to explain exams to competent patients so that patients understand what is to be done as well as what hazards, if any, are possible. -Continually reviews new developments in the field of radiography. Is continually on the alert to improve quality of exams utilizing the new technologies available. The purpose of this review is to provide the patients with the best possible scans for diagnostic purposes. BASIC REQUIREMENTS: CITIZENSHIP: Citizen of the United States. CERTIFICATION: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R). (COPY OF CERTIFICATION REQUIRED with this application) EDUCATION: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from schools accredited by the ARRT and certification by the ARRT in radiology. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED) In addition to meeting the basic requirements, you must meet the following GRADE REQUIREMENTS: GS-9 GRADE REQUIREMENTS SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must possess at least 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade of Federal Service (GS-8) which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of this position. Specialized experience is defined as performing procedures and examinations in hospitals or clinics under the direction of radiologists and other medical officers. The objective of the examinations and procedures is to produce radiographic studies that are used in medical diagnosis and interpreted by medical officers to locate injuries, foreign bodies, pathological conditions, or lesions within the body. They prepare and administer contrast media and medications in accordance with State and Federal regulations. All DRTs must be knowledgeable in Computerized Radiography (CR) and Picture Archiving and Communications Systems (PACS). In addition to the experience above, you must demonstrate the following technical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): *Ability to balance the needs of the patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures. Skill to demonstrate appropriate techniques to gather relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers. *Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure. Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography. Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous skills, and universal precautions. Knowledgeable in pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients.
