Duties
The Radiology Interventional Lead Technologist has the overall responsibility for the coordination and performance of the Interventional angiography areas. He/she works closely with the technologists, radiologists, clinicians, Chief Technologist, and clerical staff to assure optimum quality control, efficient coordination of activities, high quality diagnostic/therapeutic exam results, and patient satisfaction.
a. Inventory Control: Ensures that adequate quantities of /Angio/"specials" supplies are available to meet workload demands through a systemized process of ordering, receipt and inventory control. Fully complies with "GIP" or "logistics" requirements. Assures that CT/angiography procedure rooms are stocked with necessary supplies at all times with special attention to emergent equipment and supplies. Routinely checks for and removes outdated/expired items before the expiration date.
b. Technologist Staff Scheduling: Develops and maintains an on-call schedule for angiography technologists. Determines staffing requirements based on past, present, and future workload patterns and develops the weekly/monthly schedules. Organizes staff work assignments, including lunch and break rotations. Reports absences and tardiness to Chief Technologist. Recommends the reassignment of techs if necessary because of call-ins or increased/decreased workload. Coordinates leave requests i.e. vacation schedules, to maintain optimal staffing levels.
c. Staff Training: Trains new technologists in digital angiography, tomography, venograms, myelograms, percutaneous nephrostomy, and other special procedures. Develops formal orientation, training, and evaluation programs. Recommends, coordinates and evaluates new or modified procedures/protocols. Instructs technologists on specialized tasks and new/modified procedures/ policies. Participates in the education of IR technologists as well as other technologists through departmental in-services. Participates in the evaluation of new employees.
d. Equipment Maintenance/Repair: Coordinates the repair and installation of angiography equipment. Serves as the liaison between Radiology and Biomedical Engineering and repair contractors. Tracks and maintains records of repair histories and vendor performance. Monitors work performance by contractors and in-house Services assuring satisfactory completeness. Recommends equipment improvements, repairs, upgrades, etc. Participates in developing specifications for new equipment requests. Participates in developing service contract specifications. Develops and maintains a quality control program.
e. Performs computerized tomography (spins) of the head, neck, spine, chest and body with and without the use of contrast materials.
f. Schedules exams in a manner so as to optimize scanner times and reduce wait times while maintaining flexibility for emergency cases. This requires the ability to prioritize scheduled patients as well as the ability to accommodate the emergency patient.
g. Personal Interactions: Confers with radiologists to determine requirement of nonstandard exams. Coordinates schedules with clerical and nursing staff for patients examinations and/or procedures. Advises radiologists or referring physicians of examination results requiring their immediate attention. Works closely with Radiology Nursing staff to achieve common objectives.
. Works with the radiologist as a member of the radiographic team. Must assist and anticipate the needs of the radiologists and the performance of the exam. Must be continuously on the alert for the patient's condition, sterile field, catheter and guide wire sizes and configurations, etc. The alertness of the individual is essential to prevent contamination, recognize patient reactions, anticipate technique factor difficulties, etc.

Qualifications
Preferred experience: Minimum of 3 years experience as a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist in Interventional Radiology
Basic Requirements: Must be registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology. On call responsibilities.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency: DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist.
Education: Applicants must have completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations: Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist, GS-10:
Experience: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level.
Assignments: For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.
Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist. The incumbent functions as a Lead DRT for a group of DRTs at the GS-9 level and below. The incumbent provides a full range of general radiologic imaging exams, has a broad knowledge of the different modalities within the diagnostic radiologic area, and is accountable to the next higher-level supervisor.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: In addition, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
1. Ability to provide feedback to supervisor on technical aspects of work.
2. *Ability to resolve informal employee complaints.
3. *Ability to monitor and report on the status and progress of work and make adjustments to accomplish the workload in accordance with established procedures.
4. Ability to perform general and specialized diagnostic radiologic procedures in advanced levels of complex treatment situations.
