Duties

Initiates deviations to regulations and directives if deemed necessary in the interest of aviation safety. Assures that any additional training needed is given to personnel assigned, makes checks on progress and gives assistance when problems are encountered in attaining required level of proficiency. Controls the arriving and departing aircraft operating under VFR (Visual Flight Rules) and IFR by means of two-way radio communications. Records pertinent data on the approach control flight strips to aid in determining clearances and instructions. Controls aircraft conducting parachute operations, close air support missions utilizing live ordnance and airmobile troop operations, while simultaneously ground units are conducting artillery live-fire exercises.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has been designated “Mission Essential”. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position is supervisory as defined by the Office of Personnel Management’s General Schedule Supervisory Guide. A one year probation to assess your ability to perform supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a 1yr probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. The incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
  • The incumbent of this position must be able to meet a Class IV Aviation flight physical.
  • Rotating shift work is required.
  • This position requires an Air Traffic Control Specialist (ATCS) and/or Control Tower Operator (CTO) certification.
  • Applicants must be able to meet and maintain personal physical fitness/medical qualification standards in accordance with AR 40-501 and AR 40-8 pertaining air traffic control.

In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also be a graduate of a DoD component or FAA approved formal Air Traffic Controller school and possess Air Traffic Control Specialist (ATCS) and/or Control Tower Operator (CTO) certification. Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
