About the Position: The incumbent will be assigned to the 404th Army Field Support Brigade, Logistics Readiness Center, Maintenance Division, at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA.
Duties
Repair, overhaul and rebuild of end items or assemblies and components on emergency vehicles (Fire Apparatus), heavy mobile equipment and vehicles such as wheel and track driven excavators, hydraulic and track mounted dumpers, and utility vehicles.
Diagnose causes of mechanical operating problems, traces and locates defects, and troubleshoot repairs to determine repair procedures.
Make adjustments to meet critical manufacturer specifications and tolerances to include software updates, tolerances and safety applications.
Perform calibrations and load testing on equipment like forklifts and loaders to ensure compliance with Original Equipment Manufacturer and equipment-specific weight, load, and dig test specifications using computer and special software.
Utilize specialized diagnostic equipment to identify problems for replacement of standard components.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- This position requires incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain an Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification up to F4 [https://www.evtcc.org] within 24 months of appointment.
- This position may require incumbent to work irregular hours, weekends and/or overtime.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position requires incumbent to lift up to 60 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision to include preforming common vehicle inspections, and use judgement in determining the extent of repairs based on diagnosis; reviewing draft technical manuals associated with items undergoing tests, or being repaired. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work requires frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions for long periods. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing 50-60 pounds; occasionally handles heavier items. Uses lifting devices such as overhead cranes, hoists and forklifts to lift and position heavy items such as engines.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Works in a large maintenance building which is generally well lit and heated. Exposed to exhaust fumes, chemicals, excessive noise, dirt, oil, grease, etc. Subject to cuts, bruises, back strains, shocks, burns and skin irritation. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment as required.
