The primary function of this position is to make eligibility determinations for VA healthcare which requires an extensive knowledge of VA laws, directives, policies and procedures. The Program Support Assistant is responsible for running various reports including Unverified Status of Applications, Incomplete Encounter Management Errors, and correcting errors/updating information to finalize the registration.
Duties
Major Duties include:
Ensures accurate, timely and consistent information is entered into the appropriate database.
Verifies eligibility/entitlement for healthcare benefits for all applicants using various methods including income assessments, military discharge documents, computer hospital inquiry (HINQ), Veterans Information Solution (VIS), and other means such as communications with VA Regional Office or VA Records Processing Centers.
Take the information provided by the Veteran and assess what services the Veteran is eligible for, and advise the Veteran whether he/she is eligible or not.
Serve as advisor and expert to the BAS Enrollment/Beneficiary Travel Supervisor and support the management information components of all health eligibility related programs.
Provide exceptional customer service by exceeding the customer's expectations.
Assist the Public Affairs Office as well as other services at VACCHCS with community activities such as health fairs, Homeless Veterans Stand Downs, and Post Deployment Health Reassessment (PDHRA).
Interview deceased next of kin and provide information regarding Veteran Benefits, and funeral home information as required.
Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
GS-4 Minimum Qualifications:
General Experience: You must have at least one (1) year of general experience. General Experience is progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. OR,
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successful completion of two (2) full years of education above high school that demonstrates my ability to perform the duties of this position. NOTE: This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. If you select this option, you must submit a copy of your transcript with your application. Education cannot be credited without documentation. OR,
Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond first year of post-high school.
GS-5 Minimum Qualifications:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: providing clerical, technical, or customer support; receiving and referring phone calls; communicating and treating customers in a courteous, tactful and respectful manner while providing consistent information according to established policies and procedures; and using computer programs to prepare documents. Note: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hour worked per week. OR,
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed four (4) years of education above the high school level in any field which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. (Transcripts must be submitted at time of application). OR,
Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond second year of post-high school.
GS-6 Minimum Qualifications:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Responsible for providing administrative support; collecting, compiling and tracking data and information; processing documents and reports; establishing, updating and maintaining office files and records; performing automation duties using such software applications such as word processing, spreadsheet, electronic mail, desktop publishing, calendar, database and/or graphics; answering telephones, referring visitors, and providing information. Note: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hour worked per week. OR,

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements: This is primarily a sedentary position, but the work requires some walking, bending, stooping and carrying of light objects such as manuals, documents, etc. Concentration and sustained performance under prolonged stress is required because of the time factors involved in completion of work assignments within deadlines. The incumbent(s) work in an office/clinical setting. Work areas are generally adequate. Occasional
travel is required. He/she frequently walks to and interacts with other services throughout the facility and Community Based Outpatient Clinics.
