Performs simple and routine work involved in the maitenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings and related utilities, requiring the use of a variety of trade practices associated with occupations and such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, cement work, painting, and other related trades.
Duties
Temporary maintenance workers perform a variety of building and utility maintenance and general maintenance duties for the Buildings and Utilities, Road, Trails and Grounds, Platte River Campground, and the Manitou islands. Work will include:
Buildings and Utilities - You may be assigned to assist journeyman carpenters, plumbers, and electrician with projects related to carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, heating, air conditioning, masonry, and routine maintenance of generators. May be required to drive pickup trucks and other vehicles up to 1 ton in a variety of traffic situations and road conditions. May operate various types of power equipment.
General Maintenance: You may be assigned to clean public restrooms, pick up and haul garbage; perform minor repairs, including some plumbing, electrical, and carpentry work; pick up litter at visitor use areas; maintain campgrounds and associated facilities such as public water and wastewater systems, fire pits, fish cleaning station, picnic areas, etc., grounds, trails, boardwalks, and otherwise maintain park facilities. These positions require that you operate light pickups, electric carts, small tractors, and other types of small power equipment and hand tools.
Identifies and corrects job safety and health hazards. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as protective hearing devices, hard hats, seat belts, steel-toed shoes, respirators, and protective clothing as required by the work being performed.
May serve as an authorized government credit card holder.
Positions may work throughout the Lakeshore including the remote Manitou Islands. You must be willing to work anywhere within the Lakeshore. Housing may be available for rent, or if stationed on the islands, may be provided at no cost to you.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is within a beautiful scenic resort area on the shores of Lake Michigan . Housing, medical facilities, shopping, churches, banks, daycare, and recreational opportunities are readily available within a 30 mile radius from park headquarters in Empire. High temperatures average between 70-80 degrees in the summer and low temperatures average between 10-20 degrees in winter. Shared government housing may be available for rent. SCREEN OUT: Perform simple and routine work involved in the maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, and related utilities, requiring the use of a variety of trade practices associated with occupations such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, cement work, painting, and other related trades. Used simple measures and hand tools to replace broken planks on picnic tables; broken windows using precut stock; minor adjustments or replaces hinges, latches, and catches. Used a brush and roller on projects where appearances are not critical such as staining picnic tables and trash barrels. Tightened or replaced plumbing fittings and fixtures which do not require custom fitting or solder joints; replaced faucet washers; unplugged drains using a plunger; replaced liquid petroleum gas bottles. Performed routine maintenance on campground sites and trails using hand tools to re-grade and reset barriers to restore areas to original appearances. Operated a light truck to pick up supplies and to transport materials to and from work sites. Cleaned and serviced chemical toilets, restrooms, and other campground or visitor facilities. Operated a forklift to load and unload supplies and light equipment not requiring special rigging. Work has been under close supervision and referred unusual problems to the supervisor or a higher graded employee.
