Duties
The position of Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor is a maintenance staff member reporting to the park's Facility Manager. Incumbent is responsible for the. development, implementation, management and supervision of the lang/short-range and day-to-day activities of the park's buildings and utilities maintenance operation throughout the national lakeshore. The position is duty-stationed at Empire, Michigan but may require temporary reassignment to the Manitou Islands. Building and utility assets include over 330 buildings. Roughly two thirds are historic buildings including National Historic Landmarks and a 100-foot lighthouse. There are close to 40 - buildings associated with housing, three electrical distributions systems, four tel systems, 25 water systems and over 30 wastewater systems. Incumbent is responsible for the supervision, operation and contract management of the historic
structures, building, and utility systems operation of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Incumbent directs all field programs and activities to facilitate accomplishment of established park and division goals and objectives. Provides basic information for budget preparation and monitors expenditures. Makes decisions to facilitate program accomplishments, monitors program and ensures that required controls and accountability are maintained. Ensures -operational compliance with N~S guidelines, state and federal regulations concerning hazardous wastes, material handling and storage, building codes etc. Incumbent will serve as Contracting Officer's Representative in construction and restoration and contracted maintenance and service projects as required. The incumbent is accountable to the Facility Manager for the quantity and quality of work performed. Normally acts within standard procedures and established park policies set by higher levels of supervision. Incumbent is responsible to assure safe, efficient and economical accomplishment of all work assignments performed by subordinates under his/her supervision.
Physical Demands: The nature of this position requires considerable standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and crawling. It requires working overhead, in stretched, cramped, awkward and uncomfortable positions. On occasion the use of scaffolds, ladders, swing stage, roof and ladder jacks may be required at heights to 45 ( +/-) feet will be required. Frequently lifts, carries and moves objects or equipment of various shapes and sizes weighing up to 100 pounds. A high degree of manual dexterity, agility and strength is essential.
Working Conditions: Assignments will be in and out-of-doors exposing employee to rain, snow, wind, dust, heat and cold. Exposure to insects, chemicals, dusts, vapors, noise and fossil fuel exhaust products can be expected. Employee will be exposed to the possibility of injuries e.g., broken bones, cuts, bruises, scrapes, electrical shock and chemical irritations. Hazardous conditions will be encountered when working above or below ground level, on slippery surfaces, in crowded areas, near moving vehicles and when utilizing a wide array of power tools.

Known as a four-season recreation destination, the Lakeshore is within an easy one-day drive of several major population centers of the Midwest, including Detroit, Chicago, and Cleveland. Housing, medical facilities, shopping, churches, banks, daycare, and recreational opportunities are readily available within a 30 mile radius from park headquarters in Empire. High temperatures average between 70-80 degrees in the summer and low temperatures average between 10-20 degrees in winter. Homes are available for purchase or for rent in the commuting area. The median home price in the area is approximately $250,000 and rental rates begin at approximately $1,100 per month for 3 bedroom homes.
