This is a position for a Motor Vehicle Operator (MVO), in the Transportation Section of the Veterans Transportation Services (VTS) at the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center (WPB VAMC).
Duties
Duties Include:
Work off station for long period of time, occasionally at great distances from the Facility.
Evaluate unusual situations as they arise and make appropriate decisions to ensure the safety of patients.
Work with minimal supervision and consults with the Supervisor when situations warrant.
Serves as a patient transportation driver. Demonstrate proficiency in all areas of the transportation service. Complete all required training.
Drives the following: Shuttle buses Vehicle type: 16 to 32 passenger buses (GVW-14,050 lbs.), 32 passenger bus (GVW-36,350 lbs.), 44 passenger bus (GVW-36,200 lbs.). All other vehicle driven; patient transport Handy-Capped high-top vans (6,900 lbs.), Compact sedans, (GVW-3,936 lbs.) Mini Vans, (GVW-5,400 lbs.), Large passenger vans, (GVW-9, 100lbs.).
Abide by all City, State, and Federal regulations governing the operation of motor vehicles. Incumbent must be able to maneuver vehicles over improved and unimproved roads at up to and including highway speeds.
Work as a team member and assists others as necessary to carry the mission to completion.
Receives patient transport schedules from the scheduler for the daily patient transportation runs. Each trip is planned for vehicle type, route and equipment needed.
Familiarity with medical equipment located in patient transport vehicles and be certified in Cardio-Pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and recertified in CPR every 2 years and provide documentation to the supervisor.
Transports patients under non-emergency situations to and from various locations throughout the state. Incumbent must be knowledgeable in the proper techniques of loading, unloading and securing patients.
Enter all required motor vehicle reports and records documentation as directed by the Supervisor. When not operating motor vehicles, report to the Supervisor to assist in the daily operation of the Transportation Section.
Transport vehicles for repair, maintenance, driver back fill support.
Complete daily trip report annotating data such as mileage, driving times, any problems encountered with the vehicle and any issues arising with patient transport. Drivers will perform pre-trip inspections on all vehicles before departure.
Correct minor vehicle problems such as lamps, flat tires, tire pressure and fluid levels, communicating the need for scheduling completion of repairs when outside service is necessary.
Possess a valid state of Florida driver's license with class "B" (CDL) with passenger endorsement. Provide the Mobility Manager with proof of license and motor vehicle driving record annually.
Pass a physical examination annually and random drug testing as required for all Government Motor Vehicle Operators.
Assume responsibility for a cell phone with earpiece, pager, two-way radio or any combination of these.

Physical Requirements: Incumbent must be able to handle wight of up to 50 pounds. Incumbent must endure prolonged periods of driving and exert greater physical effort in maneuvering larger vehicles such as buses, trucks and cargo vans.
Working Conditions: Incumbent operates vehicles in all types of weather and traffic conditions and is exposed to the danger of personal and vehicle accidents. Incumbent drives in heavily congested traffic conditions at up to and including highway speeds on interstate highways and over complicated read and interchange systems. Incumbent interacts and maintains composure when dealing with patients with a variety of physical and mental disabilities. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, strains, etc. when loading and unloading patients. Incumbent may be required to use isolation precautions when transporting patients for extended periods of time. Incumbent may be assigned irregular tour of duty shift hours and weekends to support patient transport.
