This position is for a Motor Vehicle Operator in the transportation section of Health Administration Service, located at the West Palm Beach VA Healthcare System. The purpose of this position is to operate patient transport vehicles, including emergency vehicles, patient transport vans/buses and other types transport vehicles to and from VA Medical Center facilities, private healthcare facilities, and other private sector areas like patient homes, railway, bus stations and airports.
Duties
The duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
Transports patients under non-emergency situations to and from various locations throughout the state.
Operates a wide variety of motor vehicles in a safe and responsible manner. These vehicles include but are not limited to sedans, patient and passenger shuttle vans, buses, cargo vans, pick-up trucks.
Safely operates wheelchair lifts and ramps, including the proper use of vehicle device restraint/lock down mechanisms to safely transport wheelchairs, motorized wheelchairs and scooters.
Safely transport patients in a manner that minimizes disruption to personnel and ensure maximum comfort during travel, prevents shock, ensures freedom of breathing.
Detects probable mechanical problems to the vehicle during operation and report to the garage mechanic any unusual noises or operating conditions.
Practices and promotes safe work and driving habits and follow standard safety procedures, including identifying existing or potential safety hazards and promptly notifying supervisor and initiating corrective action as required.
A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement is required for the position. Must successfully complete Basic Life Support training.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIREMENT: A current, valid state-issued Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required for this position. NOTE: We cannot accept photographs, therefore; please do not submit a copy of your license with your application package. If an interview is requested, you will be required to provide a copy of your current, valid state-issued Commercial Driver's License.
Physical Requirements: Applicant must handle objects weighing up to 50 pounds and is required to move objects and persons weighing more with assistance on a regular basis. Applicant must endure prolonged periods of driving and exert greater physical effort in maneuvering larger vehicles such as buses, trucks, and cargo vans.
Working Conditions: Incumbent operates vehicles in all types of weather and traffic conditions and is exposed to the danger of personal and vehicle accidents. Incumbent drives in heavily congested traffic conditions at up to and including highway speeds on interstate highways and over complicated read and interchange systems. Incumbent interacts and maintains composure when dealing with patients with a variety of physical and mental disabilities. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, strains, etc. when loading and unloading patients and cargo. Work is occasionally dirty, dusty and wet . Incumbent may be required to use isolation precautions when transporting patients for extended periods of time. Incumbent may be assigned irregular tour of duty shift hours and weekends to support patient or staff transport requirements.
