About the Position: Responsible for supporting range operations functions directly related to the safe and efficient utilization of the Fort Eustis Range and Training Area complex in the use of high risk weapons, ammunition, and other hazardous materials on multiple ranges, ballistic lab and training sites dispersed over 3,800 acres.

Duties

As a Range Support Specialist, you will perform the following duties which is not an all-inclusive list: Serves as a Range Support Specialist responsible for supporting range operation functions related to the safe and efficient utilization of the Range and Training Area complex in the use of high risk weapons, ammunition, and other hazardous materials. Responsible for inspecting and/or implementing range operation functions directly related to the safe and efficient utilization of range complex using high risk weapons, ammunition, and other hazardous material on multiple ranges and training sites. Monitors the RTA complex for training and deconflicting safety issues with recreational activities by patrol and observation to ensure compliance with regulations, procedures, range or facility SOPs, Range Scenarios, SDZs, and special instructions. Checks new firing programs for proper setup and periodically checks on-going programs to ensure that range procedures are being followed. Advises commanders and management officials on courses of action affecting range operations, work processes and environmental conditions which impact on the safety and efficiency of personnel.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident
  • Incumbent is required to work evenings, nights, and weekends on a rotating shift, to cover 24 hour a day, 7 day a week range operation.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.

U.S. Army Support Activity (ASA) Fort Eustis, VA is a subordinate organization of Installation Management Command. ASA provides installation support services, not otherwise managed by Joint Base Langley-Eustis or other installation service providers, to all assigned, attached, and tenant units located on the installation. OR Education: Masters or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: in any field of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
