The primary purpose of this position is to operate one or more types of gasoline, diesel, or electric powered wheeled vehicles typically having a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of more than 32,000 pounds.
Duties
- Drives tractor trailers and/or other vehicles typically having a GVW of more than 32,000 pounds.
- Operates one or more electric, LPG, or diesel-powered forklift trucks.
- Drives one or more types of passenger buses which carry 16 or more passengers.
- Performs operator maintenance. Maintains records and documents actions.
- Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment.

- An appropriate, valid driver’s license is required for the position.
- Incumbent must possess or have the capability to acquire a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and any
required endorsements within 12 months of assignment. This requirement is a condition of employment.
- May be required to drive other types of motor vehicles on a non-recurring or incidental basis.
- Position requires the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth. Shift work may be required.
- The employee may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends,
and/or holidays.
- This position requires a physical/medical examination. The physical requirements of this position as determined by the manager are: Physical effort is moderate to heavy.
- Work requires reaching, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls. Associated duties require stooping, bending, and climbing.
- Lifts and carries objects weighing up to 40 pounds and heavier objects with assistance.
- Overtime may be required. May occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station and travel on military and/or commercial aircraft.
- May be required to perform other duties in support of extended mission requirements based on the scope of the mission during times of conflict or staffing shortages. May have additional duties assigned.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance.
- This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to random testing for drug use. This
position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Testing Program.
- Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing. Illegal drug use by employees in sensitive positions presents a clear threat to the mission of the Air Force, national security, and public safety.
- Incumbent of this position is subject to the possibility of a random drug test.
- This is a Mission Essential (ME) position performing a Mission Critical Function (MCF) which must continue uninterrupted after the occurrence of an emergency and continued through full resumption of all functions.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5700 Transportation/Mobile Equipment Operation Family.. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of the MOTOR VEHICLE OPERATOR (FORKLIFT OPERATOR) without more than normal supervision.
JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of operating one or more gasoline, diesel, or electric powered wheeled vehicles with a GVW of over 32,000 pounds such as truck tractors with semi or full trailers, heavy load in-line trucks, or interstate motor coaches.
2. Knowledge of cargo handling and hauling and techniques for safeguarding and protecting cargo.
3. Knowledge of traffic and safety regulations, practices, and procedures pertaining to motor vehicle and forklift operation.
4. Knowledge of operating one or more electric, LPG, or diesel-powered forklifts.
5. Knowledge of operating buses capable of carrying 16 or more passengers.
6. Ability to judge road/traffic conditions and read maps to determine the shortest and safest route; interpret instructions, specifications, etc. related to motor vehicle, forklift, and power take-off unit operation and preventive maintenance; and meet pickup and delivery deadlines and schedules.
PHYSCIAL EFFORT: Physical effort is moderate to heavy. Work requires reaching, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls. Associated duties require stooping, bending, and climbing. Lifts and carries objects weighing up to 40 pounds and heavier objects with assistance.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Drivers work mostly outside and operate vehicles in all kinds of traffic and weather on public roads (or equivalent) and are exposed to the danger of serious accidents. Drivers are exposed to dirt, fumes, and to the possibility of cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents when loading and unloading the vehicle. They drive in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems.
