Duties

Responsible for developing and accomplishing fire prevention inspections and developing an education program in assigned areas of responsibility at the installation. Conducts physical inspections of large, complex, and highly fire prone post and range facilities including mission related facilities. Determines potential fire hazards, existing fire hazards, and works with operating officials, project officers, etc., to eliminate, prevent, or reduce the hazards. Incumbent inspect fire protection systems that include automatic heat detection, automatic smoke detection, and dry chemical extinguishers, wet pipe sprinklers, dry pipe sprinklers, pre-action sprinklers, and deluge systems. Reviews work requests involving alteration and extension of existing facilities. Develops special educational materials and programs for the building coordinators required. Serves as a fully trained member of a firefighting crew engaged in the protection of life and property. Serves as certified Hazardous Material Technician, responding to hazardous chemical spills on the Installation.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.

  • This position requires certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation with Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) training.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
  • This position requires Drive Operator Aerial certification.
  • This position requires the incumbent to operate an Emergency Vehicle and must successfully complete the Emergency Vehicle Operator's Course (EVOC).

  • This position requires certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation with Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) training.
  • This position works a 60-hour week (120 hours bi-weekly). The incumbent is required to work one 24-hour shift per week (60 hour, total work week) as part of fire department manning.
  • Firefighters are exposed to inherent dangers involved in fighting all type fires, such as toxics, acids, liquid propellants, gases, etc.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08). Selective Placement Factors: This position requires you to possess and maintain all of the following Department of Defense, International Fire Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (Pro Board) equivalent certifications: (Please note: All certifications must be uploaded at time of application): Fire Instructor I, Fire Inspector II, Firefighter II, Hazardous Materials Technician, Driver Operator Pumper, National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or State EMT. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Fire EngineeringFire SuppressionPreventative Maintenance Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-08).
