About the Position: The firefighter independently performs primary duties and carries out task necessary to insure the best outcome in emergency situations. The lead firefighter observes, documents and reports performance to the Supervisory Firefighter, who, in turn, reviews for general adequacy and responsiveness to emergency situations.
This position is included under the provisions of Special Retirement Coverage (SRC) and may have both a maximum entry age and a mandatory retirement date.
Duties
Receives general supervision from Supervisory Firefighters who provide overall objectives, the scope of duties and establishes guides.
Receives specific direction and instruction, and complies with orders from GS-0081-08 Lead Firefighters, (locally determined to be the Captain of the Truck or Engine) or fill-in Captain, on whichever vehicle the firefighter is assigned.
Performs primary duties necessary to ensure the best outcome in emergency situations.
Reports performance to the Supervisory Firefighter, who, in turn, reviews for general adequacy and responsiveness to emergency situations.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position is covered by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Program. The incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R and must pass urinalysis testing, as required prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.
- Must possess/maintain the following Department of Defense Firefighters Certifications (DODFC) (or reciprocal equivalent): Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Driver/Operator Pumper and Hazardous Operations.
- Must participate in the Division Wellness Program to include pre-employment and annual physical evaluations.
- This position requires that you possess and maintain the National Registry Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT-B) or any state EMT-B certification. Certification must be current.
- Must possess/maintain a valid State Driver's License, and must obtain (within nine (9) months of appointment) and maintain whatever license is required to operate firefighting vehicles in the state of their license issuing agency.
- Must be able to obtain a Government Driver?s Certification within 6 months from effective date of appointment.
- TDY is required approximately 10% of the time.
- Must possess or obtain within 9 months of employment, and maintain: DODFC or reciprocal equivalent) for the following certifications: Driver/Operator Aerial, Hazardous Materials Technician, Confined Space Rescue.
- Must possess or obtain within 9 months of employment, and maintain: DODFC or reciprocal equivalent) for the following certification: National Incident Management System (NIMS) certification to the 100a, 200a, 700a, and 800b level.
- Incumbent may be subject to recall.
- Rotating shifts are required. Hours of work encompass fluctuating tours of duty to include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. Overtime may be required as directed and is subject to recall for periods of emergency overtime.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience.
To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as experience demonstrating the particular duties of the position, such as: (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) operation of fire communications equipment; (5) controlling hazardous materials incidents and/or (6) developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06)
In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess -Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Hazardous Materials Awareness and Hazardous Materials Operations certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, Driver/Operator Pumper, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M. AND possess and maintain the National Registry Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT-B or any state EMT-B certification. Certification must be current.
Certificates required within nine (9) months of hire: State Drivers License for Fire Fighting Vehicles, Hazmat Tech, Confined Space Rescue, Driver/Operator Aerial, Telecommunicator I and II, NIMS 100a, 200a, 700a, and 800b.
Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).
