Duties
Acts as liaison between the National Security Agency and Fort Meade on matters of Fire Prevention and Protection.
As Deputy Fire Chief, incumbent is responsible for fully sharing with the Fire Chief in overall day-to-day technical and administrative management of the Fire Protection and Prevention Division.
Responsible for scheduling fire safety inspections and evaluating their effectiveness.
Ensures fire suppression and detection systems, building construction, and occupancy are adequate to ensure all Garrison and Tenant activities operate in a fire safe environment.
Serves as division Safety Officer.
Exercises full supervisory responsibility over a fire fighting and fire protection inspection force of approximately 40 personnel ensuring that all personnel and equipment are maintained in a constant state of readiness.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
- This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. This position requires one (1) 24-hour shift per week with a work schedule of 120 hours per pay period.
- Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime. This position performs, as required, mutual aid support to local fire departments.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- Must possess the following DoD Firefighter certifications: Fire Officer IV, Instructor II, Inspector II, Hazardous Material Operations and Incident Commander.
- This position requires the incumbent to participate in the Division Wellness program to include annual physical evaluation, structured physical evaluation, tri-annual physical performance evaluation, and on-the spot drug testing.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a secret security clearance.
- This position requires possession of, or you must obtain within 9 months of appointment, the National Incident Management System (NIMS) 100a, 200a, 300, 400, 700a, and 800a certification.
- This position is subject to an initial drug screening, and random testing thereafter. A negative drug test result must be received by human resources within 30 calendar days after the Entrance on Duty (i.e., start date).
- Selectee’s inability to successfully pass or refusal to conduct the drug test may result in the job offer being withdrawn during the recruitment process or subsequently being removed from Federal service for failure to meet a condition of employment.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience which includes planning, scheduling, directing and supervising fire protection, fire prevention and emergency services programs. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess Fire Officer IV, Instructor II, Inspector II, and Hazardous Material Operations and Incident Commander certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).
