This position is part of the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The incumbent participates in the formulation of Joint Staff positions on such issues, and prepares congressional testimony and reports, briefing materials, and background papers for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (VCJCS), and other senior military members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).

Duties

As a SPACE POLICY & STRATEGY ADVISOR at the GS-0301-15 some of your typical work assignments may include: Supports the CJCS in the statutory role to prepare military analysis, options, and plans to recommend to the President and the Secretary of Defense (SecDef) on matters related to space; Independently identifies and focuses the attention of senior managers on issues with major defense policy and national security implications; Works directly with the Departments of Commerce and Transportation to review civil space launch applications for Joint Force equities; Works with industry partners to develop integration strategies of commercial satellite capabilities into the military space architecture to provide direct support to the DOD and Joint Force, supplement military capabilities in daily operations and/or as necessary, shift capacity in crisis and conflict to the DOD mission requirements; Supports the development of compartmented strategies and plans to accomplish a coordinated and integrated department approach to space operations; Serves as the J5 Special Access Program (SAP) / Compartmented Access Program (CAP) coordinator

Qualifications

You may qualify at the GS- 15, if you fulfill the following qualifications: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service: Applies policy, plans and strategy development processes within DoD and across the Interagency, to include actions for space associated capabilities and force structure, and operational doctrinal concepts sufficient to generate new, original, and authoritative thinking and advice to senior military and civilian leaders on policy, plans and strategy issues impacting the nation and the Department's contribution to national security; Uses DoD authorities, policies, strategies and planning processes to include statutory responsibilities to draft and publish planning guidance to assist the President, Vice President, Secretary of Defense, and CJCS in providing strategic direction for the Joint Force; Applies the Joint Staff's role in providing military advice on space strategy, plans and policy related to the interagency through the National Security Council-led Policy coordination committee, Deputies committee, and Principal committee processes: Applies the Joint Staff's role in supporting the Vice President of the United States in the development and execution of the National Space Council strategies, plans and policies Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Substitution of education may not be used in lieu of specialized experience for this grade level.
