Duties

Oversee a communication program that conveys the NCI’s leadership role in cancer research, diagnosis, prevention and treatment through the application of state-of-the-art and unified public affairs and media relations activities. Advise CEA and NCI Directors, providing leadership to a complex communications program which is highly visible both nationally and internationally and has an extensive impact on a broad range of constituencies in the public and private sectors. Provide strategic advice on handling sensitive issues and the release of information for highly visible and publicized studies, projects, and events that receive intense scrutiny by the public, the media, and Congress. Coordinate with NIH, HHS and the White House on the handing of these issues and represents the NCI Director in related interactions. Articulate and defend NCI position orally and in writing to international, national, regional, and local media as well as other federal agencies and citizens groups. Represent the NCI at public meetings and hearings on a wide range of controversial and highly visible issues.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship requirement or proof of being a U.S. National must be met by closing date.

Qualifications

You qualify at the GS-15 level, if you meet one of the following qualification requirements: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: managing public affairs and communications programs for a public health organization; overseeing the development of communications materials and content; developing plans, strategies, and procedures for communicating information on organizational programs, issues, or research results; and providing supervision and direction to staff.
