The John D. Dingell VA Medical Center is recruiting for an Architectural Unit Supervisor for the day shift/first shift. The incumbent is responsible for preventive maintenance inspections, maintenance, repairs, and in-house modifications associated with the Architectural Shop.
Duties
As the day shift/first shift Architectural Unit Supervisor, the incumbent is responsible for preventive maintenance inspections, maintenance, repairs, and in-house modifications associated with the architecture at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center. Architectural finishes included are masonry, drywall, roofing, doors, ceilings, flooring, partitions, painting, signage, casework, and other associated architectural systems. The afternoon supervisor, Architectural Unit may take immediate action to correct hazardous conditions which could result in personal injury to individuals and/or damage to equipment, property, or buildings.
Major duties include, but are not limited to:
Taking immediate action to correct hazardous conditions which could result in personal injury to individuals and/or damage to equipment, property or building.
Issuing daily work assignments for the team, maintaining in-service training and physical exam records and keeping technicians informed of any changes in assignments.
Ensuring appropriate materials are used in a variety of trades, particularly in masonry, drywall, roofing, doors, ceilings, paint, signage and other architectural systems.
Maintaining comprehensive contracts and renovation projects for the facility.
Reviewing construction drawings and construction sites and recommend changes and additions to ensure continuity with the current architectural design, structure, and code requirements.
Inspecting all areas and buildings for compliance with VHA policies, JCAHO, occupational safety health standards, state and local standards and guidelines and annual workplace evaluations.
Responsible for providing support to the Veterans Outreach Centers and the 50 bed off-site Domiciliary.
Performing a wide range of preventative maintenance for facility building service equipment and systems.
Staying current with regards to architectural and design codes and their regulations and procedures and ability to recognize potential architectural needs and safety hazards.
Assures compliance with fire, safety, conduct, housekeeping, and other pertinent rules and regulations.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 6:00am-2:30pm; may be subject to emergency call-in or off duty-hours in order to accomplish the needs of the service

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Preferred Experience: Experience as a VA Supervisor in the Engineering Department
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The incumbent must be able to stand for long periods of time, work in confined or awkward/cramped spaces, able to adapt to heat, cold and dampness. Employee must be able to lift a minimum of fifty pounds as he/she will be required to frequently carry and set up parts and equipment up to the fifty pounds. Duties actively involve climbing, pulling, kneeling, bending, and walking for prolong periods. Employee works inside, outside and, with proper PPE and safety precautions, is exposed to the elements and various dangerous working conditions. The incumbent may be subjected to adverse conditions such as heat, cold, noise, moisture, electrical or health hazards associated with a health care facility. Incumbent is required to work occasionally outside, and on top of tall buildings and in drafty small spaces.
