This position serves as the Mechanical Unit Supervisor for the Facilities Management Service (FMS) at the Detroit VA Medical Center under the supervision of the Maintenance and Operations Supervisor. The incumbent is required to work under minimal supervision and resolves problems associated with the work of the office. Incumbent has total responsibility for the supervision and management of the employees within the Mechanical Unit section.
Duties
Major duties include, but are not limited to:
Supervising the work of the Mechanical Unit and to exercise the full supervisory responsibility for control over work operations to include preventative maintenance inspective, maintenance, repairs and in-house modification of all mechanical equipment and utility systems at the Detroit VA Medical Center.
Responsible for preventative maintenance inspections, maintenance, repairs and in-house modification of all mechanical equipment and utility systems located at the medical center. The mechanical systems/utility systems included are: domestic water systems both hot/cold, all associated distribution piping, booster pumps, and fixtures, plumbing, sanitary, and storm waste piping along with ejection pits and waste pumps, steams systems to include high, medium and low pressure from the Energy Center to the HVAC air handlers and associated equipment, all medical gas systems including natural gas, oxygen, medical air, lab air, dental air, vacuum, wag, nitrogen, nitrous oxide, and all compressors and manifolds that support the medical gas systems, all fire sprinkler system pipes and valves.
Maintaining and repairing all medical sterilization equipment.
Acquiring and overseeing service contracts for work that is required for general and emergency work in the Mechanical Section.
Planning daily, weekly, monthly, and annual work schedules and sequence of operations of subordinates.
Establishing deadlines and priorities on the basis of general work schedules and methods and policies established by higher levels of supervision.
Selecting workers and assigning tasks to be performed for the supervision of approximately 15 permanent employees, as well as temporary workers and CWT staff.
Directing clerical or program support in locating of sources and correct identification of parts, materials, and supplies obtained.
Serving as Contracting Officers Representative (COR).
Responsible for being the on-site representative of the Contacting Officer (CO).
Ensuring all contract requirements are abided by, and the contract is completed on time and paid in full when completed.
Preparing reports, memorandums, polices and procedures.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 6:00am-2:30pm

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The work involves sitting at a desk. Walking, stooping, crawling, and climbing through areas to conduct inspections. Lifting and moving heavy objects of up to 50 pounds. Occasional periods of physical exertion are required. The work is primarily performed in a hospital setting to include patient care areas, administrative areas, laboratories, treatment rooms, engineering shops, energy center, and construction sites. There are some off-site facility inspections. In some areas where exposure to infections and biological materials (to include radioactive and carcinogenic materials may occur), the incumbent must wear protective clothing such as masks, goggles, gloves, shields, etc. The work may involve moderate risk requiring exercises of safety precautions when working around construction sites, etc.. Work environment may include working outside during inclement weather. Work may be conducted on all shifts and may include weekends and holidays.
