About the Position: Serves as a Range Safety Specialist with responsibility for providing a variety of technical safety and related support services to the Range Safety Office, Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobility and Security (DPTMS) Fort Bliss, Texas.

Duties

Ensure ranges and training areas are maintained in safe operating condition through inspection and coordination with Range operations. Coordinate usage of all ranges for firing small arms, Infantry, Armor, Rotary and Fixed Wing Aircraft and Artillery weapons. Collaborate with military and civilian personnel on all matters pertaining to Range Safety and special instructions. Work closely with Environmental Staff to control, minimize, or eliminate hazards.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Employee must be able to obtain and maintain a secret security clearance.
  • Employee must be able to obtain and maintain a valid State driver’s license.
  • Employee must be able to obtain and maintain access to the Fort Bliss Local Area Network (LAN).
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Conducting safety inspections of range areas and facilities; AND 2) Preparing range training facility reports; AND 3) Providing guidance for maneuver land use, live fire safety, area cleanup, and environmental concerns. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D. in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Occupational Safety and Health. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Customer Service (Clerical/Technical)Organizational AwarenessPlanning and EvaluatingTechnical Competence Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
