Duties
Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital is seeking a full time board certified or board eligible Neurologist qualified to diagnose, treat, and manage patients with neurological diseases, according to standard, usual, and acceptable methods and techniques. Applicant with diverse general Neurology experience, with cognitive or multiple sclerosis experience preferred but not limited to those specialties. Duties also include outpatient and inpatient neurological evaluations; patient examinations; diagnosis; consultations and inpatient service. ACLS /BLS required. Hines VA Hospital is a tertiary hospital affiliated with and adjacent to Loyola University Medical Center, Maywood Illinois ten miles due west of downtown Chicago. The selectee is accountable to the Service Chief, Department of Neurology.
Patient Care Duties at Edward Hines, Jr. VA Medical Center
Develop and maintain a faculty outpatient Neurology practice and academic program, that provides extensive expertise in the treatment of various neurologic conditions
Neurology Inpatient Service:
Evaluates and manages the neurology inpatient service as the attending physician and advises the primary physicians on inpatients hospitalized at the Edward Hines, Jr. VA for which consults from the Neurology Service are requested. This will include evaluation and care for patients in the Emergency Department, Medical Service, Surgical Service, and from other inpatient services.
Supervises and teaches trainees including medical students, residents and fellows.
Provides on-call coverage twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, in accordance with the Attending call schedule
Administrative Duties:
Serve on Edward Hines VA Hospital department and hospital committees as requested by the service chief.
Complete all Medical Record documentation requirements as specified in the Medical Staff Rules and Regulations on a concurrent basis
Maintain an academic affiliation with Loyola University Medical Center Department of Neurology
Physician must be cognizant of, and comply with, all VA policies and procedures, as well as pertinent state and federal regulations.
The position involves direct outpatient and inpatient clinical care, teaching and supervising trainees. There is minimal administration work, but the physician will be required to attend staff meetings, mandatory training, and complete peer review evaluations. Time will be provided to complete this work.
Research Duties at Edward Hines, Jr. VA Medical Center:
Apply for, and if obtained, maintain Veterans Affairs funding to continue patient-oriented research to improve the quality of care of patients with neurologic conditions.
Facilitate ongoing clinical research with Loyola University Medical Center Attendings, Fellows, Advance Practice Nurses and Residents
Teaching Duties at Edward Hines, Jr. VA Medical Center:
Supervise and instruct Neurology fellows, residents, and medical students, on Neurology Services from Loyola University Medical Center
Scope of Assigned Duties/ Function
The physician will provide direct patient care and work as a member of an expanded healthcare team consisting of all general and subspecialty trained neurologists and neurology nurse coordinators.
Supervisory Controls
The physician will report to the Neurology Service Chief.
As an independent practitioner, the incumbent is responsible for planning and carrying out the assignments independently, resolving most of the conflicts that arise, coordinating the work with others as necessary, and interpreting policy on own initiative in terms of established objectives. In some assignments, the employee also determines the approach to be taken and the methodology to be used. The employee keeps the Service Chief informed of progress and potentially controversial matters. Completed work is reviewed as appropriate to ensure requirements and expected results are met.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR
[(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR
(3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Additional Requirement: Open to general Neurologists with and without subspecialty training. Neurologists with Fellowship-trained subspecialty experience, especially in the areas of Cognitive and Behavioral Neurology, and Multiple Sclerosis are encouraged to apply

Physical Requirements: The work requires standing or walking for a major portion of the work day. Physical requirements could consist of a variety of standing, walking, twisting, turning, sitting, bending, pushing, carrying and light lifting
Education
Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
- Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or
- Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
- For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. [If the applicant does not claim an ECFMG certificate, facility officials must still confirm that the medical school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated..
NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
