Duties
The Associate Chief of Staff, Geriatrics and Extended Care (ACOS/GEC) is responsible for providing a full range of geriatric services for a diverse group of aging Veterans within the Hines VA Hospital. These duties include but are not limited to referral consultation covering all issues of Geriatrics. The ACOS/GEC will perform as a consultant to our inpatient service, Emergency Medicine service, and others as appropriate. In addition, the ACOS/GEC will perform Geriatric Evaluation and Management and will develop treatment plans for our residents in the Community Living Center. In addition to excellent leadership skills, the ACOS/GEC will be knowledgeable and proficient with VA Performance Measures and the principles of System Redesign, demonstrate leadership qualities, as well as strategic planning skills, dedication to patient-centered care, and a commitment to organizational stewardship. ACOS/GEC is required to lead, give direction, provide knowledge, skills and abilities in the area of geriatric and rehabilitative, and lead professional staff in these clinical domains.The Associate Chief of Staff, Geriatrics and Extended Care is responsible to the Chief of Staff. Leadership assigns patient care management by defining objectives, priorities and deadlines; general guidance is provided, but functions and responsibilities are carried out independently. The incumbent keeps the Chief of Staff informed of progress of all clinical and administrative matters. Results are reviewed for completion and conformance with policy
Duties and Responsibilities of the Associate Chief of Staff, Geriatrics and Extended Care (ACOS GEC) will include but are not limited to
Ensures clinical care is delivered in accordance with hospital and VHA policy, meeting or exceeding community standards and VHA national benchmarks.
Responsible for the fiscal oversight of the Geriatrics and Extended Care Service
Chairs the Hines Hospital GEC Committee.
Serve as a member of the Medical Executive Board (MEB) and is responsible for advising staff members of the recommendations and implications of Medical Executive Board action as it concerns the service and Medical Center.
Serves on hospital committees and task forces, both standing and ad hoc, as appropriate. Participates in local, VISN, and national level committees.
Assist the Chief of Staff in the enforcement of the policies of the Medical Center Bylaws, and Rules and Regulations of the staff.
Provides direct clinical and administrative oversight for medical students and Internal Medicine residents, and fellows from Loyola University Medical Center (LUMC).
Develops performance metrics for all provider classification to drive performance and to direct desired behavior.
Is in compliance with VHA Scheduling Directives to enhance the management of access.
Is actively engaged in facility Quality Improvement activities, including compliance with the VA credentialing/privileging process and ensuring that an active Peer Review process is in place for Geriatrics and Extended Care Service providers.
Actively engaged in Service Recovering and have knowledge of SHEP and other patient satisfaction data sources. Uses customer service data for service improvement.
Operates a sound personnel performance management system in compliance with the Union Master Agreement and HR policies including VHA labor relations policies. Responsible for, have knowledge of and/or ensuring that the following are current.
Has knowledge of and is in compliance with conflict of interest and ethics policies related to business practices/associations including contracting and procurement regulations.
Actively collaborates with our academic affiliate Loyola Medical Center (LUMC).
Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR
[(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR
(3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Additional Requirement:
BLS and/or ACLS Certification as determined by MCM
Board Certified in Geriatric medicine
Preferred Experience:
At least 10 years of clinical practice. Experience in progressive administrative and supervisory experience for at least 3-5 years in the field of Geriatrics.

Physical Requirements: Walking, bending, stooping, and some lifting in the direct care of patients. There may also be extended periods of sitting.
Education
Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
- Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or
- Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
- For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. [If the applicant does not claim an ECFMG certificate, facility officials must still confirm that the medical school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.]
NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
