Located 12 miles west of downtown Chicago and at six out patient clinics across the region, Hines VA offers primary, extended and specialty care to Veteran patients in the Chicago area. We are the largest VA in the state of Illinois, where more than a million Veterans reside.

Duties

MSL detail position is for an interim Tier 2, Supervising Hematology/Oncology (HemOnc) Section Chief, located within Medicine Service Line at Edward Hines Jr. VA, a level 1A facility with consults and referrals from VISN Medical Centers and outpatient clinics. Position involves overseeing the administrative functions; the residency/fellowship program; evaluating, and implementing new technologies as related to Hematology/Oncology and overseeing the quality improvement program. The Section Chief plays an integral role in identifying and addressing any deficiencies or areas of improvement while implementing corrective actions/procedures. Clinical oversight responsibilities involve identifying patients who present to the clinic that may be subtle or exhibit overlapping symptoms due to more complex diagnoses. Additional responsibilities include facilitating patient access to continuing medical care by appropriate referrals to other healthcare providers; diagnosing, treating, and managing patients with hematologic or oncologic diseases according to acceptable methods and techniques; directing the care of Hematology/Oncology patients to include oversight of medical extenders, and other paraprofessional and administrative personnel when necessary. Section Chief will perform chart reviews and coordinate Hospitalists regarding patient care issues; document patient care data in electronic medical records such as: history and physical exams, daily progress notes for inpatients, encounters for outpatients, consult notes and entering both new and renewal prescriptions; recommend improvement of work methods, organizational features, and the restructuring of positions to support the Hematology/Oncology services and quality patient care. The HemOnc Section Chief reports to MSL Chief of Medicine; directs the patient care within the unit; ensures appropriate coverage for patients, and provides specific performance guidelines for physician, physician assistant, and nurse practitioners. He/she monitors staff, ensuring all paperwork, education, training for providers is being met; oversees future recruitment; provides clinical care and planning in an interdisciplinary approach in collaboration with the Chief and Assistant Chief of MSL and other health care professionals. The current position entails possible academic appointment at Loyola University of Chicago, Stritch School of Medicine. Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME) Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement) Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full-time with board certification) Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8am - 4:30pm

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency/Hematology-Oncology Fellowship Training: Physicians must have completed residency/fellowship training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), OR (2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. The Hematologist/Oncologist must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care to the patients serviced by the Hematology/Oncology Section. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of diseases along the spectrum of hematologic and oncologic disorders and possess the ability to provide care based upon physical, psycho/social cultural, safety and other age-related factors as noted in the competencies described in the department and/or unit specific policies and procedures. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Must be Board Certified. PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Clinical/Translational/Basic Science research, statistical and decision support experience preferred.

Education

Provider must meet basic requirements and hold a degree of Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a college or university approved the Administrator; complete and ACGME accredited residency satisfactory to the Administrator, meet the physical standards as described by the Administrator and will be licensed to practice without restrictions in a state or territory of the Unites States. Provider must have successfully completed an accredited Hematology and/or Oncology Fellowship program and be Board Certified or Board Eligible in Hematology and/or Oncology. He/she must maintain current BLS Basic Life Support and ACLS certification at all times. Will maintain good relationship with nursing and other services necessary for the efficient functioning of the Hematology/Oncology section.
