This position is located in the Pipe Shop, Facility Management Service of the Edward 'Hines, Jr. Veterans Hospital, Hines, IL. The primary purpose of this position is to provide Pipefitting / Plumbing Services.
Duties
The incumbent is assigned to the Pipefitting Unit. The incumbent repairs or installs pipefitting systems (including high-pressure systems); cutting, threading, soddering and cementing joints on black and cast iron and galvanized steel, copper, brass, P.V.C. Piping, and clay drainage tile.Major Duties:
Responsible to repair, install or replace building service equipment or systems including: centrally supplied water, air, vacuum, oxygen, natural gas, steam and distilled water including supporting devices such as pressure regulators, valves, strainers and traps and related controls and primary distribution systems such as water, steam, natural gas and sanitary drainage.
Responsible for-the repair and maintenance of a variety of hospital equipment supported by building service, equipment and systems such as dietetic equipment including ranges, ovens and dishwashers, laundry equipment, pumps including condensate and sump, sterilizers, autoclaves and stills.
Uses rodding equipment to open clogged drains arid waste lines serving sanitary and storm drains.
Responsible to insulate hot. and cold water; steam condensate return piping and to apply insulation to duct work, hot water storage tanks and other related equipment.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 7am to 330pm

Physical Requirements: The incumbent's work requires periodic climbing on ladders, scaffolds and platforms and sustained standing in one position, stooping, bending, or kneeling to repair or install systems or equipment in confined areas. The pipefitters frequently handle, lift, carry, and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds). Occasionally, the pipefitters may lift and carry items that weigh over 23 kilograms (50 pounds). The incumbent frequently works in close quarters where there are patients and other personnel.
Working Conditions: The work is done inside and outside, and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy. The pipefitters are sometimes required to make installations and repairs in areas where bad smelling fumes are present. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of uncomfortable heat conditions. The pipefitters are frequently exposed to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, bums, and infections. They are occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones. The incumbent frequently performs work in pipe tunnels where high ambient temperatures and humid conditions exist. The incumbent is exposed to pipe pressures of 150 lbs. P.S.L. and water and steam temperatures which may exceed 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
