This position is located in the Pipe Shop, Facilities Management Services of the Edward Hines Jr., Veterans hospital, Hines, IL, The Primary purpose of this position is to provide Pipefitting / Plumbing services.
Duties
Leader Major Duties:
Passing on to other workers the instructions received from supervisors and getting work started, e.g., by assigning the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the group led;
Working along with other workers and setting the pace;
Demonstrating proper work methods;
Assist the supervisor in preparation of estimates and ordering of materials for constructions, maintenance, repair, or improvements to systems and structures through the Medical Center.
Seeing to it that needed plans, materials, and tools are available, and that needed stock is obtained from supply locations;
Obtaining needed information or decisions from supervisors on problems that come up during the work;
Maintaining a current knowledge, and answering questions of other workers on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives (for example, technical orders);
Seeing to it that there is enough work to keep everyone in the work crew busy;
Checking work while in progress and when finished to see whether the supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met;
Urging or advising other workers to follow instructions received from supervisors, and to meet deadlines;
Assuring that safety and housekeeping rules are followed (for example, assuring that limits of safe machine operation are not exceeded and that all tools are used properly);
Reporting to supervisors on status and progress of work, and causes of work delays;
Answering questions of supervisors on overall work operations and problems (for example, concerning additional on-the-job training requirements for individual employees).
Help train employees on proper steps in completing work orders and associated tasks.
In addition to standard leader duties, the incumbent is responsible for: Incumbent will assume limited acting supervisory responsibilities during those periods when the supervisor of the team is not present for duty, i.e. on annual leave, sick leave, or training. Duties shall include but not be limited to:
Tracks attendance and leave usage. Refers leave requests to the program manager when the supervisor is not present.
Urges/advises resolution to informal employee complaints within delegated limits. When appropriate refers complaints to supervisor.
Assigns work orders to personnel.
Utilizes Above PAR system to create, close and input hours for completed work orders.
Prepares documents for the procurement of materials, parts and services.
Checks outsourced work in progress and when finished, for completeness, compliance with supervisor's instructions and that work meets all codes.
Incumbent must obtain and maintain Level 2 Contracting Officer Representative (COR) Certification required to manage service contracts in their shop that they are responsible for.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 700am-330pm

Physical Requirements: The incumbent's work requires periodic climbing on ladders, scaffolds and platforms and also sustained standing in one position, stooping, bending, or kneeling to repair or install systems or equipment in confined areas. The incumbent carries parts and equipment that may weigh in excess of 50 pounds. The incumbent frequently works in close quarters where there are patient and other personnel.
Work Conditions: The incumbent works both indoors and outdoors. The incumbent frequently performs work in pipe tunnels where high ambient temperatures and humid conditions exist. The incumbent is exposed to pipe pressures in 150 pounds P.S.I. and water and steam temperatures which may exceed 350 degrees Fahrenheit. The pipefitters are frequently exposed to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns, and infections, and possibility of broken bones.
