This position is located at the Hines VA Medical Center, Hines, IL. - a Level 1b Complexity VHA Facility, and is organizationally aligned under the Engineering Service Line, within the Maintenance and Repairs Section.
Duties
This position is aligned under the Engineering Service Line within the Maintenance and Repairs Section, serving under the direct supervision of the Maintenance and Repairs General Foreman of the Engineering Service. The Pipefitter Supervisor is responsible for the supervision of all of the personnel and activities assigned to the Plumbing shop. Is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all steam, water, sewerage, gas systems, circulating and suction pumps and all plumbing utilities. Is responsible for the routine maintenance and repairs to the various kitchen equipment at the hospital. Is accountable for the quantity and quality of the work to be done and for assuring efficient and economical work operations.
Assigns, directs, and reviews the work of subordinates and evaluates their work performance.
Plans, schedules and coordinates work operations.
Solves problems related to the work supervised.
Determines material, equipment, and facilities needs.
Works with employees and union representatives on employee suggestions, complaints, grievances and other matters.
Checks work to assure that procedures, specifications, workmanship, and deadlines are met.
Trains new employees in proper methods and procedures.
Plans the use of workers, equipment, facilities, materials, and tools on a day-to-day or project-by-project basis.
Assigns work to individuals and provides technical direction or help in accomplishing difficult work processes.
Provides advice and counsels workers on how to improve their performance and work techniques.
Maintains work reports and records, and assists supervisors in planning overall leave schedules.
Is a purchase card holder, and reconciles purchase card charges within the established time limits.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: M-F 7am to 330pm

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The position requires walking, standing, bending, sitting, crawling and climbing. Must have good vision, with or without glasses. May lift or carry tools, equipment, ladders, scaffolding, parts and supplies up to 50 pounds. May occasionally lift and carry items over 50 pounds. May work from ladders, scaffolding, and hydraulic platforms. Requires working in uncontrolled environments, in inclement weather conditions, and in confined or uncomfortable spaces. Many work sites are hot, dirty, dusty, greasy, poorly lit, cramped and with unpleasant orders. May be subject to possible dangerous working conditions including exposure to hazards normally encountered in the hospital trades and various types of infections, electrical shock or electrical burns, cuts, bruises, and strains. Required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary to accomplish assigned tasks in a safe manner.
