You will serve as a SUPERVISORY FIREFIGHTER in the NAVY FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES of NAS JAX.

Duties

You will administer training, orientation, indoctrination, and education programs for fire safety and awareness. You will coordinate with officers on other shifts and stations to ensure work accomplishment, training, and priorities are met. You will operate communication equipment in a fire or emergency medical situation. You will brief senior leaders or other employees on matters on firefighting actives, personnel, and equipment. You will develop a risk management plan to identify and manage risks (e.g., noise, hazardous material storage, explosives, flammables). You will prepare policy guidance in response to firefighter program related executive orders, public law, regulations, and agency requirements.

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance while employed in the subject position. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.

  • Supervisors in the executive branch have a heightened personal responsibility for advancing government ethics. You will be required to review the 14 General Principles of Ethical Conduct at 5 CFR 2635.101.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • The employee is required to work a 72-hour week, which includes weekends and holidays. Subject to mandatory overtime and recall.
  • This position requires the employee to work under adverse environmental conditions and falls under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program.
  • Position requires the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth.
  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-8 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) operation of fire communications equipment; (5) controlling hazardous materials incidents and/or (6) developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention. Additional qualification information can be found from the following Office of Personnel Management website: https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/classification-qualifications/general-schedule-qualification-standards/0000/fire-protection-and-prevention-series-0081/ This position requires the incumbent to possess the following certifications: Firefighter I & II, Fire Officer I & II, Fire Instructor I, Fire Inspector I, HAZMAT Awareness, HAZMAT Operations, HAZMAT Technician, HAZMAT Incident Commander, Driver Operator Pumper, and National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT). These certifications must be awarded by National Registry, DoD, IFSAC or ProBoard to meet the requirements. If you do not possess the certifications, you will be rated ineligible. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to lift and move heavy objects, such as charged fire hoses, fire extinguishers, equipment, and incapacitated persons. Must be able to wear protective clothing, such as firefighter ensembles weighing 50 - 60 pounds. Climbs ladders and works at various heights. The work requires above average agility and dexterity. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Employee is exposed to out-of-control fires, HAZMAT spills, or possible explosions. May suffer from burns, dehydration, and other effects of heat; smoke inhalation, heavy protective clothing, falling materials, or explosions. Subject to physical injury and sensory damage from firefighting activities, exposure to HAZMA T and high noise levels. Must deal with victims in emergency situations that may be in varying stages of fright, panic, injury, and shock. There may be hazards while operating or riding fire trucks at high speeds under adverse conditions. The employee works outside in all types of weather conditions. Ability to move charged fire hoses, fire extinguishers and other equipment. Must be able to wear protective clothing, such as firefighter ensembles weighing 50 - 60 pounds. Climbs ladders and works at various heights. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
