Job opening: Aerospace Engineer, AST, Safety and Mission Assurance
Salary: $140 923 - 183 202 per year
Published at: Oct 31 2024
Employment Type: Full-time
As the Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) Model Integration Lead for Artemis missions, you will be responsible for coordinating and integrating all vehicle program PRAs applicable to each mission in SAPHIRE, all associated analyses (e.g. human reliability, software risk, and external events risks), overseeing the development of all abort models, generating the desired output / results, and documenting all work performed in these duties for each mission report and presentation.
Duties
Use the SAPHIRE Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) computer code to develop a mission level assessment from prelaunch to post-landing by integrating fault trees and event trees either from scratch or from other PRA analysts for each figure of merit.
Coordinate and integrate all vehicle program PRAs applicable to each mission in SAPHIRE, all associated analyses (e.g. human reliability, software risk, and external events risks), and all abort models as applicable to specific mission phases.
Lead abort modeling and integration across programs, mission phases, and relevant working groups and directorates, as necessary.
Generate the desired SAPHIRE output / results and document all work performed in these duties for each mission report and presentation. This may require the development and use of post-processing SAPHIRE results.
Assist in preparing and reviewing presentation charts and documenting work in applicable Artemis mission PRA reports.
Communicate across the Artemis PRA development team (including each vehicle program PRA team) located at several NASA centers, as well as across directorates outside of Safety and Mission Assurance (e.g. Human Health and Performance and crew office).
Work closely with the Artemis PRA Lead to ensure good communication of model status, any known issues, and the results of the mission level assessment. This includes identifying and solving issues with existing methods and/or needs for new methods.
Represent the Artemis PRA team at program control boards, working groups, and milestone reviews on PRA related topics to determine whether the presented products are appropriate and correct by actively participating in the forum and splinter groups.
Foster a culture of engagement, diversity, inclusiveness, excellence and innovation. Champion NASA's commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility to create an environment that promotes a commitment to safety, integrity, and teamwork.

The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement.
To qualify for GS-14, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level:
Executing Safety and Mission Assurance activities and evaluating the reliability of programs for human space flight;
Developing fault trees and event trees using SAPHIRE computer code, receiving models from others and integrating them into an overall mission model, to ensure mission timelines are properly accounted for, and troubleshooting issues;
Coordinating and communicating technically complex ideas to internal and external stakeholders to obtain the information necessary to model aborts which are timeline/vehicle dependent and require the integration of multiple PRA models; and
Utilizing risk management, acceptance, and mitigation strategies in the assessment or review of an aerospace system/subsystem, and presenting results and recommendations to senior leaders.
Your resume must include a clear and detailed narrative description, in your own words, of how you meet the required specialized experience.
