You will serve as Astrodynamics Technical Discipline Lead (TDL) in the Flight Mechanics and Trajectory Design Branch. You will serve as the expert within the Aeroscience and Flight Mechanics Division (AFMD) as the overarching expert on Astrodynamics, Trajectory Analysis, and Mission Design for spacecraft exo-atmospheric flight phases.
Duties
Serves as a recognized technical expert and demonstrated leader for the development spacecraft astrodynamics.
Mentors and provides technical oversight to younger engineers in the discipline of astrodynamics.
Maintains overall responsibility for the assessment of complex systems and understand the mission constraints and spacecraft requirements of human-rated systems.
Builds partnerships and new business opportunities with academia, industry, and international partners related to astrodynamics. Benchmarks industry best practices and promotes adaptation of these practices and tools into NASA analysis methods.
Participates in NESC Flight Mechanics Technical Discipline Team, represents the JSC Engineering Directorate during relevant interactions with other NASA Centers and with agency officials; chairs international conference sessions in astrodynamics.
Advances the state of the art of the astrodynamics technical area through technology development projects and the pursuit of new innovative approaches.
Develops and assess simulations and modeling of vehicles in exo-atmospheric environments during both transit and orbit maintenance flight modes.
Participates in the management of computational facilities within AFMD which are used to perform astrodynamics analysis. Represents AFMD at the directorate level in all aspects of spacecraft astrodynamics.

Qualifications
In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below and have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.
NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement.
To qualify at the GS-15 level, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level:
Applying principles and concepts related to celestial mechanics, astrodynamics, and guidance, navigation, and control to achieve a practical projection of the movement and flight paths of human-made bodies in space environments, and the application of numerical analysis and computer simulation techniques;
Providing leadership and technical oversight in exo-atmospheric Mission Design development for major program systems;
Building collaborations with both industry and academia to advance the state of the art in Mission Design and advanced astrodynamics;
Developing and accessing spacecraft modeling for operational vehicles as well as conceptual advanced spacecraft.

Education
Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:
a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus; and that provided an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations.
If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.
Degrees in engineering technology are
not considered qualifying for this position.
