Duties
If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing support to the E-Discovery Center in the assistance cases prosecuted by the Northern District of Alabama. Typical work assignments will include:
1. Litigation Support, to include:
a. Discovery Processing. Under the guidance of the supervisor and/or team lead, performs routine litigation support tasks necessary to process common ESI (e.g., PDF files, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint files, emails, etc.) and prepare it for review or production by the case team. Uses specialized software applications (e.g., processing software) to perform basic processing tasks and meet the technical needs of criminal and civil case teams.
b. Discovery Review. Under the guidance of the supervisor and/or team lead, performs routine litigation support tasks relating to case teams' review of common ESI. Uses specialized software applications (e.g., document review databases) to perform these tasks.
c. Discovery Production. Under the guidance of the supervisor and/or team lead, performs routine litigation support tasks necessary to prepare ESI (e.g., PDF files, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint files, emails, etc.) for production to opposing counsel. Uses specialized software applications (e.g., document review databases, processing software) to complete these tasks and meet the technical needs of civil and criminal case teams.
2. Litigation Support, Customer Support, and Project Management. Under the guidance of the supervisor and/or team lead, provides customer support services and project management services in connection with electronic discovery, litigation support projects, and litigation technology software applications.
3.Technical Assistance with Case Presentation and Preparation. When requested and following established procedures, provides technical assistance, in a developmental capacity, to case teams presenting or filing electronic evidence or exhibits in civil or criminal legal proceedings
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.
Requirements
- You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
- Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
- You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
- If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
- Time-in-Grade: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement.
- You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement and before placement in the position.
Qualifications
Specialized Experience: At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level in Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector. Specialized experience may include: performing routine litigation support assignments such as assisting with organizing case information; assisting in the use of technology such as preparing discovery or organizing digital evidence; and editing a variety of legal documents.
OR
Education: One full year graduate education leading to a degree in a related field (e.g., Criminal Justice, Law, Information Technology); or a Masters or equivalent graduate degree in one of the above fields, demonstrating the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to
perform the duties of the position. Transcripts are required. OR A Bachelor's Degree AND possess at least one of the following criteria:
1. class standing in the upper third of the graduating class;
2. an overall GPA of 3.0 OR at least a 3.0 based on courses completed during the final two years of my curriculum; a GPA of at least 3.5 based on the average of required courses completed in my major field OR based on the average of required courses completed during the final two years of my curriculum; OR
3. election to membership in a national scholastic honor society.

Combining Education and Experience: A combination of specialized experience as described above and graduate education described above which when combined equal 100% of the requirements.
(Please note: Only education in excess of 1 full year is creditable.) To calculate your percentage of education, first determine the total number of hours that exceed 18 semester hours. Then divide the total number of your excess semester hours by 18. To calculate your percentage of qualifying experience, divide your total number of months of qualifying experience by 12. Now, add the two percentages together. The sum of the percentages must equal at least 100%. Transcripts are required.
