Duties
Process current deaths of service members and their dependents, Department of the Army Civilians (DACs), active-duty National Guard and Army Reservists.
Research and coordinate with appropriate offices (within and outside the organization) to obtain information about the death so that processing may begin.
Determine the primary next of kin (NOK) based on regulatory criterion to direct the disposition of remains.
Brief and provide information to the NOK regarding entitlements involving the removal, preparation, transportation, and interment of remains.
Obtain escorts and conduct escort briefing on procedures and responsibilities.
Coordinate the appointment of a summary court officer for monitoring the disposition of personal affects.
Validate that the exact specifications are properly negotiated by procurement personnel with the funeral home.
Review Temporary Duty (TDY) Vouchers, authorize travel, and certify payment of escort expenses and travel costs.
Serve as a member of a disaster response team in the search, recovery, evacuation, and identification of remains at an accident site.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Performs 24-hour casualty assistance duties and must be immediately available to respond.
- Employee will be required to work irregular tours of duty to include nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Employee must maintain training in applicable policies, techniques, tactics, and procedures.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or requirement requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: processing current deaths of service members and their dependents, Department of the Army Civilians, active duty National Guard and Army Reservists; serving as a member of a disaster response team in the search, recovery, evacuation, and identification of remains at an accident site; and providing expertise in the analysis, testing and evaluation of the emergency and evacuation planning, operations and response of the Casualty Assistance Center in the event of multiple military casualties. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
