Duties
This position is a mission critical occupation and is responsible for the analysis of system and/or security requirements, the development and implementation of mission critical applications for the agency's Information Technology operations.
Major Duties:
As an IT Specialist, Desktop Engineer you will be working with desktop engineers and contractors to ensure the use of technologies efficiently and securely and to help bureaus and offices use technology effectively.
Your major duties and responsibilities include:
Configuring, managing, and operating tools such as Endpoint Management (EPM) Software, scripting, and other configuration tools efficiently and effectively to provide high level of security to protect the organization.
Ensuring that workstations are secure by evaluating, testing, implementing a standard configuration baseline based on established industry security configuration benchmarks.
Maintaining a secure desktop environment by creating, testing, and deploying securely configured automated software packages for use both in the initial workstation provisioning process and to fulfill ad hoc requests including uninstalls of software.
Serving as subject matter expert (SME) for EPM Software and other configuration tools.
Assisting end users in advance troubleshooting regarding hardware and software including responding to and mitigating potential security incidents such as malware.

Requirements
- U. S. Citizenship is required.
- All qualifications and time-in-grade requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Federal applicants must submit an SF-50 to show status and time-in-grade.
- Males ages 18 through 25 must be registered with the Selective Service.
- PHS Commissioned Corps applicants must submit current personnel orders.
- A one year probationary period may be required.

To qualify for this position, you must possess IT related experience and/or training that demonstrates that you possess each of the following four competencies:

In addition to the above OPM requirements, in order to qualify for these positions, your resume must clearly demonstrate that you have one full year of minimum qualifying specialized experience comparable in difficulty and responsibility to the grade levels listed below in the federal service.
MINIMUM QUALIFYING SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, an applicant's one full year of specialized experience must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for successful job performance.
GS-13: Your resume must clearly demonstrate that you have one full year of the minimum qualifying specialized experience comparable in difficulty and responsibility to at least the GS-12 level in the federal service.
Examples of the minimum qualifying specialized experience equal to the GS-12 level include the following types of tasks performed on a regular and recurring basis:
Configuring and troubleshooting desktop workstations to meet the needs of an organization using operating tools such as Endpoint Management (EPM) software, scripting, and remote control tools to ensure that end user systems are secure and stable.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; community; student; social). If such experience is on a part-time basis, you must provide the average number of hours worked per week as well as the beginning and ending dates of the experience so it can be fully credited.
Applicants whose resumes clearly demonstrate the required minimum qualifying specialized experience will be evaluated based on the occupational assessment competencies listed below. A competency is defined as a measurable pattern of knowledge, skills, abilities, behaviors, and other characteristics that an individual needs to perform work roles or occupational functions.
DESKTOP ENGINEERING - Knowledge of the principles, methods, or tools for ensuring that desktops are installed, configured, and maintained to meet the needs of an organization including setting up software and applications, configuring network settings, and managing hardware and peripherals.
INTEGRATION AND CONFIGURATION - Knowledge of methods and practices involved in the security integration or configuration of a variety of different system platforms, operating systems, applications, and equipment configurations.
IT DESKTOP CUSTOMER SUPPORT - Work that involves the planning and delivery of IT desktop customer support services, including installation, configuration, troubleshooting, customer assistance, and/or training, in response to customer requirements.
