Duties

You will prepare surfaces to be painted by sanding, filling holes and cracks with putty, cleaning, scraping old paint, etc. You will assemble and erect scaffolding and staging. You will apply rubbing compounds and wax. You will perform routine painting on building exteriors and interiors, streets and curbs, and tall structures of various types. You will clean and maintain brushes and tools used in painting. You will keep working areas clean. You will ensure that articles not to be painted are removed or covered.

Requirements

  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
  • Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination. A periodic health examination is required.
  • You will be required to lift between 35 and 80 lbs.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. paint fumes and lead poisoning).

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to perform routine tasks of the painting trade without more than ordinary supervision, including preparation of surfaces via sanding/cleaning/puttying; assembling scaffolding and staging; applying smooth, even coats of paint via brushes, spray guns, and rollers; working from scaffolding/staging at various heights; and/or cleaning brushes, tools, and work areas. Applicants must meet the requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Job Qualification System for Trades and Labor Occupations (X-118C).
