About the Position: Fort Jackson is centrally located in Columbia, South Carolina. Major attractions in the area include the South Carolina State Museum which offers exhibits on the state's historical past. Duties
Operate a passenger bus with an approximate gross vehicle weight up to 26,500 pounds and with passenger capacity of 23 students and 3 wheel chairs.
Conduct maintenance and safety checks on the school bus prior to beginning all routes and report problems to the designated government representative.
Responsible for the general cleaning of bus to include cleaning inside of bus daily and washing exterior of the bus once a month.
Assist in the loading and unloading of children with special needs and their equipment, as well as assisting these students in getting to and from their classrooms.
Report all disciplinary action to the school principal.
Record bus route and schedule (including time information on the trip ticket) and fills out accident reports when necessary.
Performs maintenance responsibilities such as: sweeping, waxing floors, cleaning lavatories, ect to support the school.
Woks with students in order to establish and maintain safety on the bus at all times.
Maneuver vehicle in and out of constricted areas such as narrow streets and roads, as well as congested parking lots.
Assist children getting in and out of the vehicle safely and ensures their safety while on board by following seat belt and other safety regulations.
Requirements
- Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Requirement.
- Proof of U.S. Citizenship required.
- Direct deposit of pay is required.
- One year probationary period may be required.
- Appointment subject to a suitability /fitness determination, as determined by a background investigation.
- This position requires a Tier 1 (T1) investigation with Childcare Checks since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age.
- This position is a Testing Designated position subject to applicant testing and random drug testing. You will be required to sign a DA Form 5019 requiring participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required.
- Work requires the employee to drive a vehicle. Valid driver's license and commercial driver's license required as well as attending accident-avoidance training
- Must be able to lift items 50lbs.
- Moter Vehicle Operator travel away from the normal duty station on a daily basis

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Motor Vehicle Operator without more than normal supervision. Applicants must meet the screen out element to be considered further. To meet the screen out element, applicants should document experience or show the ability to do the following: operate a school bus safely to include detecting school bus mechanical problems; assisting children safety into and out of a bus to include operating a wheelchair lift and transporting to and from a school- Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Efforts: Incumbent exerts light physical effort in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls. Must be able to lift a child typically 50 pounds or less should that be necessary. Occasionally uses heavy powered cleaning equipment. Exerts moderately heavy physical effort such as continuous standing, bending, stooping, and reaching. Works on ladders and scaffolding in the performance of some duties.
Working Conditions: Incumbent operates vehicle in all kinds of weather in a controlled traffic environment throughout a government installation, and also in heavy traffic at highway speeds. May be subject to injury as a result of accidents while driving or when loading and unloading vehicles. Is exposed to the possibility of serious accidents while driving at highway speeds. Custodial and Laborer tasks are usually performed indoors in areas which are adequately heated, lighted, and ventilated. Exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritation from strong cleaning solutions. Care must be taken to avoid serious injury when working on ladders and scaffolding or when using heavy powered equipment.
