This position is located within the Textile Care Plant of the Environmental Management Service at the Fargo VA Health Care System in Fargo, ND. The Laundry Machine Operator processes a variety of soiled linens and textiles into clean and sanitary items for reuse by customers.
Duties
The major duties include but are not limited to:
Loads and unloads machines to rated capacities;
Programs micro-processors on laundry machines for various textile classifications;
Utilizes proper wash formulas based on classification and degree of fabric soiling;
Performs spot-clean procedures to remove stains utilizing specialty chemicals;
Determines appropriate chemicals to use on a variety of textile types;
Sorts articles to be cleaned into lots, according to color, fabric, dirt content, and cleaning technique required;
Maintains written work productivity records;
Maintains chemical usage for reporting purposes;
Maintains incoming weight of linens for reporting purposes;
Makes minor adjustments to equipment;
Operates commercial grade 2 - 400 lb. washers, 1 - 200 lb. washer, and 1 - 40 lb. washer;
Operates commercial grade 1 - 500 lb. dryer and 2 - 100 lb. dryers;
Operates 500 lb. overhead conveyer system, flat work ironer, small and medium piece steam-heated garment finisher;
Operates hoppers and an extensive monorail system;
Operates automated folding machines;
Monitors the washers to ensure the correct water level, chemical dosage, and temperature level during the washing cycle;
Applies color dye to rags and other linen as assigned;
Cleans washroom work area daily and equipment as needed;
Performs minor repairs and preventative maintenance;
Performs some hand-folding of certain linens;
Reports damages and/or mechanical failure when detected;
Reports deficiencies in supplies or equipment as necessary; and,
Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 6:00 am - 2:30 pm.

Qualifications
Physical Effort and Work Conditions: The person in the position is required to stand or walk continuously for entire shift on concrete floors; bend and use hands and arms constantly while concentrating on the proper manner of performing work tasks. Tasks also require quick hand and arm movements to meet production standards. Must have strength and stamina to perform heavy physical tasks such as pulling hot, wet wash from washers/extractors and/or pushing heavy carts weighing over 50 pounds. Frequently lifts linen bundles or linen items weighing over 50 lbs. Standing in place for extended periods of time at the flatwork ironer is necessary as a laundry worker.
The person in the position is constantly subject to machine noise, vibration, hot and humid temperatures, and exposed to the possibility of bruises and burns from carts and/or machines. May be exposed to drafts from opening and closing of doors. May be exposed to disagreeable odors and contamination associated with handling soiled laundry. Usually separated from the rest of the textile care workforce by a staph barrier. Duties are performed inside a building where outside elements are not a factor and lighting is satisfactory. Safety rules and infection control procedures must be applied and observed.
