This position is organizationally aligned to Facilities Management Service at the VA Illiana Health Care System, Danville, IL. The primary purpose of this position is performing work involved with construction, alterations, repair, fabrication and modification of items and structures such as framework, rafters, demountable partitions, doors, finished paneling, kitchen cabinets, overhead doors, all types of door operators, installation of metal casework, and other carpenter-related items
Duties
Construction Work: Performs all types of carpenter construction work such as framework; installation of rafters, doors, stairs, finished paneling, and drywall; drywall taping and finishing; installation of windows, demountable partitions, interior and exterior trim, trusses, and beams; fabrication of concrete forms, concrete pouring and finishing; installation of siding, PVC wall covering, high pressure laminate wall covering, PVC handrails, corner guards, and demolition work.
Installation Work: Removes, replaces, and installs all types of suspended ceiling tile systems and panels and acoustical wall and ceiling tile. Removes, replaces, and installs all types of floor tile, vinyl sheet flooring, and seamless flooring using welded rod or chemically welded seam systems. Removes and installs carpeting, glue-down or stretch, including seaming.
Fabrication: Fabricates cabinets, kitchen cabinets, plastic laminate tops, shelves, furniture, and other types of cabinetry fabrication when expediency is needed or when special items are needed that cannot be purchased.
Roofing: Removes, prepares and installs flat roofs and shingle roofs.
Lock Work: Repairs, overhauls, modifies and installs a variety of locking devices on doors, desks, safes, vaults, file cabinets, and other secured locations. He/she must reset cores, make keys, replace cylinders, rebuild locksets, and change and repair combinations on safes and vaults. Also performs a variety of installation and repair processes such as filing, drilling, chiseling, and grinding.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Requires considerable standing, stooping, and bending. Works on scaffolding and ladders that requires work overhead or in stretched, cramped, or awkward positions. Arm movement is considerable when nailing and using such tools as handsaws, planers, wrecking bars, etc. Incumbent is required to lift items weighing up to approximately 50 pounds.
Working Conditions: Some work is done in shops where the incumbent is subjected to possible cuts from hand and power tools, danger from flying chips or splinters, etc. and at times from the unpleasant atmosphere of sawdust in the air. Sometimes it is necessary to work outside in cold and inclement weather. The incumbent must also work on high ladders and scaffolding and on top of buildings up to five stories in height. The incumbent is also required to operate and work from a powered man lift at heights up to 100 feet above the ground.
