This position is organizationally aligned to Facilities Management Service at the VA Illiana Health Care System, Danville, IL The primary purpose of this position is performing work involved with construction, alterations, repair, fabrication and modification of items and structures such as framework, rafters, demountable partitions, doors, finished paneling, kitchen cabinets, overhead doors, all types of door operators, installation of metal casework, and other carpenter-related items.
Duties
Passes on to other workers the instructions received from supervisors and getting work started.
Helps train employees on proper steps in completing work orders and associated tasks.
Assists the Supervisor in establishing priorities and deadlines based on general work schedules, methods, polices, and code requirements.
Checks work while in progress and when finished to see whether the supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met.
Informs Supervisor of the need to effectively and economically use of allocate resources, both human and material.
Constructs, installs, repairs, and modifies wood and wood substitute structures.
Sets up and operates a wide variety of wood working machines and tools.
Assembles items with a variety of joining techniques such as miters, rabbets, dados, and uses glues and adhesives to secure wood pieces.
Installs alterations and/or remodels which includes removing and installing partitions, additions to buildings, openings of walls for installation of door and windows, and lays out fabricate and installs stairs.
Uses wood, metal, and various composite materials when installing or replacing interior partitions, flooring, counter tops, and moldings.
Fills in for Supervisor and assumes leadership over complex projects, often involving multiple trades.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
Your resume must demonstrate the knowledge to lead a trade team; ability to lead subordinate team members in day to day assignments; ability to enforce applicable safety regulations and polices, safe work methods/practices and proper utilization of safety equipment; communicate effectively with supervisors, teams being led and other leaders; knowledge of wood and wood substitute materials, and construction techniques; ability to interpret complex instructions, sketches, blueprints, and building codes; skill in setting up and operating a full range of industrial woodworking and related machinery; knowledge of advanced shop mathematics to plan, compute, and lay out complex and exact project with features; and must have a solid background in Carpentry.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements: The incumbent works at benches and off trestles. This requires considerable standing, stooping, and bending. The incumbent also works on scaffolding and ladders that requires work overhead or in stretched, cramped, or awkward positions. Arm movement is considerable when nailing and using such tools as handsaws, planers, wrecking bars, etc. Incumbent is required to lift items weighing up to approximately 50 pounds.
Working Conditions: Some work is performed in shops where the incumbent is subjected to possible cuts from hand and power tools, danger from flying chips or splinters, etc. and at times from the unpleasant atmosphere of sawdust in the air. Sometimes it is necessary to work outside in cold and inclement weather. The incumbent must also work on high ladders and scaffolding and on top of buildings up to five stories in height. The incumbent is also required to operate and work from a powered man lift at heights up to 100 feet above the ground. The incumbent must be courteous and helpful to all persons he/she meets or with whom
he/she comes in contact, including patients, employees, and visitors.
In this position the worker is required to work in environments potentially containing dust, smoker asbestos fibers, harmful vapors or other products that create a hazard to the employee's health. It is mandatory that all approved protective equipment is worn as directed and all procedures that have been or will be adopted by the VA are followed to protect the worker from all known health hazards. As a condition for initial entrance on duty in this position, the incumbent must submit to and pass a physical examination, pulmonary function testing, respirator certification by the personnel physician and be fitted to wear a respirator per OSHA requirements.
